Citroen DS3 billowing black smoke out after injector change

Unread post by DP1990 »

Hey guys, was wondering if anyone could help me as I’m stumped! I bought my car, a 61 plate DS3 DSport 1.6 back in late 2022. I suspect the previous owner “lost” the DPF off it at some point, but it’s never really been an issue and passed the MOT before I bought it and the MOT in late 2023 with no issue in regards to emissions. I have many times thought about buying a preowned DPF to make it fully legal, but wouldn’t know how to re-enable it in the ECU.

About 3 weeks after buying it, I had the number 3 injector fail and this was replaced by a garage under warranty, I am assuming that since it was a garage, it was replaced with a brand new injector rather than a reconditioned one.

Sadly, injector 4 failed a few weeks back, testing revealed it was the injector itself that was faulty so I opted to replace it. I didn’t want to spend £400 on a brand new injector so I opted for a remanufactured one. It passed all testing and seemed to be in good condition. However, since fitting, my car has been absolutely billowing black smoke out. It will smoke under heavy acceleration and then smoke if you so much as blip the throttle in neutral. This was not an issue before fitting.

I was going to see about refitting the old injector temporarily to perform some more testing, but all the lettering has completely faded so coding it will be a big issue! I then decided to see if I’d saved the previous code to my Autel device, and upon doing so I noticed some weird stuff.

My Autel device reports that cylinder 1 and 2 both have the same injector codes… But cylinder 2 has a different code on the injector itself. Injector 3 (the one that was replaced by a garage) ALSO has a different code on Autel to what is printed on the injector. When looking at live data, I can see that injectors 1, 2 and 3 have all had a complete programming cycle. On injector 4 though, it reports that it’s had a rapid programming cycle but a complete cycle is still in progress. I've posted photos of this below.

Does anyone have the slightest idea where I should be looking? Thanks in advance :)
