306 xsi

Post by silverline »

im looking at buying a 306xsi but i dont know that much about them. im aware that they made a 2.0l 8v but when i was looking on autotrader someone was advertising an xsi but it was a 2.0l 16v! was a 16v xsi actually built or is it simply a mistake? if so does anyone know the performnce figures for it? and what do i need to know when looking around at them? any help would be appreciated.

as far as I know the only xsi was the 8v, the 16v was the 306 s16. Go onto www.parkers.co.uk and find out the price for any old 306 and at the bottom there will be a link to technical info and it will list all the models there

There was a 16 Valve 306 XSI model
It had the 137BHP 1998cc XU10J4 16 valve lump out of the 406 fitted to it.
The 306 S16 had the 1998cc 16 valve 155 BHP lump out of the 405 MI16 fitted, & the 306 GTI6 had the 1998cc 16 valve 167 BHP lump.

No idea, Its more then likely its got the smaller 247mm brakes fitted that the standard 306 models have.

Yes the later models have a 16v engine that needs to be worked very hard to get the best from. Apart from the better spec of the later cars, I would prefer an earlier 8v xsi. I think these have the 266mm brakes.

My 16V XSi has the 266mm brakes, but still feel a little weak...
Fitting a K&N to it is all I have found to be needed to turn it into a rather spiffing little hot hatch

I thought it had the same engine as the S16 / GTi-6 - the engine code between my vehicle and GTi-6 has an identical engine code - apart from a -6, which I assume refers to the 6 speed box?

The phase 2 & 3 XSi models are 16v and have 266mm front discs and the engine code is XU10J4R, the GTi-6 models are XU10J4RS.
I've been disappointed with mine. It's not very rapid, does'nt handle that well, in fact it does'nt feel like a hot hatch. Build quality is appaling, and reliability is also poor.

well my 150bhp zx 16v is slow in a straight line and so will be 306 s16s which were written as 155 (as are most zx's). So the 137bhp and lower spec xsi's will be even worse. Warm hatches at most. I dont class mine as a hot hatch as its mid 8's to 60 which is painfully slow these days. Still fun down twisty lanes though as its quite torquey.

Have you considered going to the dark side and picking up a Dturbo instead? You won't beat that many cars out of the lights (not that I condone that sort of thing) but they're great on windy, hilly roads and motorway driving.

nah as i need a bit more poke and the zx 16v is very torquey down low and all my driving is down tight twisty lanes. Mine does eat petrol though so if my journey to work was on more normal roads yes I would consider one. Old zx volcane td's are quite cheap these days etc

If you think a 16V is torquey low down, you *REALLY* need to try a good turbo diesel. Pulling away from the lights rapidly isn't a problem once you've modified your driving style.
The type of work you do is exactly where they excel. And they only use half the fuel.
