Locking wheel nuts frustrating tip/how to

Unread post by rolandcad500 »

I'm sure some of us remember not having locking wheel nuts at all. But over the years we ended up getting them on most cars. For one reason or another. They seem to get more and more complicated.

I'm a reasonably handy sort of guy. With a carpentry background. My hobby/passion is old cars mainly. But can turn my hand to other tasks too.

One day. I saw my neighbour cars sat decapitated or their drive. I didn't ask anything as I hadn't seen any paramedics or anything so assumed all was well.

It then turned out they seemed to have had an incident with a kerb. Kerb won. Car didn't. It's a c3 Picasso. Front one side was smashed but mainly underneath. Rather than visual front the front. Having a little time on my hands. I offered to help. Which resulted in a lot of time. Maybe 3-4 days of spannering and bending stuff back into place. Sourcing parts and alike.

Now we are all possibly aware of the type of wheel nuts that citroens use these days. Round and need 4 pins to align. Then undo sorted. So one didn't need undoing as the hub strut wheel were all buggered. So they were replaced.

With trying undo the others the key was in bad shape. Only one pin left. So I went home and found my locking wheel nut removal tools I've had for years. Yep didn't fit. Arhh. So on the Internet to buy some more. Didn't turn up that quickly. But these are sold as Citroen ones to remove these locking wheel nuts. Which they seem to just shear off a small section of the nut. As it only has a main shaft of about 6mm or so. Didn't measure. Just by the looks of it. So proceeded to drill them out instead. Spent probably approximately 2 hours doing this. On just one. With the shoulder on the bolt making more difficult to judge where to drill to. But success. Thanks goodness. So baring in mind I expected this to be a five minute job with the tool I had purchased. I then had a rethink.

I have a finger file. I couldn't live with out. Does so much stuff it's mental. Adjust holes and a massive amount of things. I took this finger file and proceeded to put a groove in the bolts. My tool has a belt width of 13mm. So dropping it in endways a fair way. I then got a half inch extension and whacked it in hole. Nice and tight. Put a socket wrench on the end. Result. Did the other one cleaned up in like 20 minutes. Gunna try and upload some pictures to show it now.
