Replacement Siemens Diesel Injectors an Economical Solution?

Unread post by 1080 »

I have been given a near-mint C1 Diesel 1.4 with the usual Siemens injection system to play with.
A local garage sold it to a couple who I know. On their way home, it was clear that something was very wrong. Low power, stalling, check light on etc. Fortunately, I had covid when they bought it, so I couldn't 'recommend' it.

To cut along story... They returned it. The garage had kept it for five months. Wouldn't give a refund: Their money was 'already spent' and so the garage tried lots of bodges to 'get shut'. Eventually they got the car back last week. Running worse than ever! From Boxing day to May they messed with it. The obligatory breaking of every plastic clip/connector along the way...
The owners thought it needed a new engine and asked for my opinion.

I agreed to look at the C1 and just as I brought my hand tools and diagnostic tool out from my unit, the two lads from the unit opposite, heard it running and asked what was wrong.

I said 'it's supposed to need a new engine, but I suspect at least two injectors.'
So they brought out around £5k of specialist diesel test tools. Checking each injector for solenoid winding faults and piezo crystal performance, they confirmed my thoughts: three injectors u/s. They quoted £600 to recondition all four injectors and refit, then do any other necessary work needed to make it run properly.

Now as the windscreen was cracked by the seller whilst they tied to 'fix' it, it was very close to 'beyond economical repair' and with the MOT now due, the new owner said take it away. Keep it and give me £200 if you can do anything with it. By now, I'd began to love the C1. But I was planning on brand new injectors and running it until the fuel savings had made the car pay for itself. Spending £1k+ on a £1k car?
I'm supposed to at least make the workshop unit pay for itself...
A new windscreen can be had for £75 on eBay if you can collect from London btw.

Luck has it, taking my 306 1.9D for the MOT, the garage gave me four low mileage injectors!
But one was of the wrong type. By chance, I found a brand-spanking new genuine Siemens for £33 and three reconditioned German 'DieselFixNeuss' ones. The quality of these reconditioned injectors look very impressive!

Complete with a 'Bosch DCi Injector Test Protocol' printout, these three were just a over a tenner each on eBay! I've messaged the eBay seller to see if they have any more...

I believe the usual price is about £165 for four, exchange inclusive of P&P and they are - obviously - a German company.

You also get encoding data and everything about the parts from 'DieselFixNeuss' looks superb!
They will be checked by the aforementioned two mechanics (Doctor Diesel Susan Mill Padiham Burnley) and I will report back. Happy days! I can get around 85mpg* from the diesel C1, so hopefully these recon' injectors are a good as they appear to be. Their reviews seem to back this up.

*When I was foreman mechanic at a Citroen dealership, customers who'd bought the the new AX 1.0 were told in the adverts to expect some silly-low fuel consumption figure. So rightly, they complained. Driving in my bootless stocking feet, and a run-to-empty fuel tank, I'd get 38-40 miles on 1/2 gallon. We also found that every early AX had 2xloose screws underneath the Solex carburettor. Retighten with the weaker variety of Loctite sparingly applied. And the car behaved properly on choke and MPG was greatly improved. All single-choke 1980s Solex suffer from this malady. You do need a CO meter to set it up following securing the two screws....
Gawd I'm borin'!

Brevity is my middle name from now on :-)

And now, after months of trying, it finally comes up on Gov, GSF and Euro Car Parts as correct!
How strange?
The only thing I can find which makes sense is that the MID days base was having a lot of trouble when they 'updated' it.
Happy days!
Another French car will hopefully be saved!
And now for another 109 paragraphs....
