2009 Dispatch 2.0 HDi stalled, wouldn't start, then would 5 mins later. P1315?

Unread post by carll0s »

Hi. My mum was on her way over here from Manchester in her Dispatch based motorhome.
She had done most of the 30 mile journey including motorway, and then while on an A round close by, she said the van started to feel like it was misfiring, then it died. Apparently it was missing a bit, then a bit more, then it just died.

She called me, I got her to try to start it, and it cranked but would not start.

I dug out the only generic OBD code reader I could find (I have lots of BMW and VAG stuff.. not much use), and when I got there (15 mins later), engine temp was OK, I plugged in code reader and got a P1351 which I gather can be glow plugs or related electrics, however I have no mileage from when that code was stored i.e. whether it was current or old. I cleared the code, and decided just to try to start it, and it started fine. She drove the rest of the journey to mine no problem.

Later that evening she drove it home, again no problem.

In the 18 months or so that she's had it, she has been taking it for a spin every weekend to keep it alive etc, but not had any real long journeys in it. She has been over to my place a few times in it. She is now ready for some proper trips in it but is very worried about it failing on her and is considering cancelling some camping trips and a Spain tour.

Any ideas where to start with this? It was the hottest day of the year so far - Sunday 19th May, if that means anything. Any common issues that crop up under high temperatures on these?

I'm not so hot with diesels but I gather the glow plugs aren't doing anything once the engine is running so that does leave me a bit stuck, else I would just replace all 4 glow plugs and maybe related relay/ignition wiring.

I'd be grateful of any advice - thanks very much. I have a pretty well stocked garage / workshop and lots of tools etc.

Thanks,
Carl

It really needs a diagnostic but something that can fail and stop the engine when hot and then work again once cooled is the crank shaft sensor but since the engine needs to run to show a fault code failure of this might not show one. It is highly unlikely the P1351 is the problem.

Thanks Paul. I was thinking this too (initial googling on Sunday turned up mention of the CPS, and I thought it made sense that it could be heat affected).
