Mental Arithmetic Training...

Unread post by CitroJim »

Maths has never been my strong subject, especially the ability to do it in my head...

I have a need to do some serious training in one particular area and that involves accurately and quickly subtracting an integer value between 1 and say 60 or 70 from a time anywhere between 25:00 to say 70:59 minutes:seconds. The integer, unless there's an adjustment, will always be subtracted from the minute value.

I've looked at some math(s) training apps. but they don't seem to hit this particular spot. Most seem to be game-orientated and aimed at children.

The reason for this is that I have ambitions to become a CTT accredited Timekeeper (there's a big shortage and most are now quite elderly) and another reason is I missed an (in hindsight) obvious mathematical error made by my appointed timekeeper when compiling and submitting my recent Open TT event results...

I don't want that to happen again so any thoughts on how to sharpen up this aspect of my mathematical abilities will be hugely appreciated :D

Thanks!

All you can do is practice Jim - should be easy enough to set something up in Excel that will generate a random time and integer number, and hide / then show the answer. My VBA is a bit rusty but I could probably do it...

That's about my level of competence Jim.
My wife was just the opposite, could do mental arithmetic blindingly fast and deadly accurate, much faster than calculators, that she sneered at.

Well, I'm happy to report I'm starting to get there. I'm not yet very fast but definitely improving both in speed and accuracy :)
