C5 Aircross Towbar Fitting

Unread post by mmcd87 »

Hello,

I wondered if anyone could offer any advice or experience on towbar fitting to 2019 C5 Aircross?

I have purchased OEM wiring loom part number 1648389280 - there is no instructions in box, only link to online Citroen servers which I have no access to.

I have purchased Tow Trust towbar.

Is there anywhere I can get advice on interior trim removal and rear bumper removal? I was hoping would be clear where all clips etc are to try and make sure I do not break any. It seems like everything is online and no available PDFs to view.

Thanks

These guys give a fitting guide that indicates how to remove the bumper:
https://www.pfjones.co.uk/citroen-c5-ai ... bar.html

also fitting instructions for the dedicated wiring kit (albeit not specific instructions where clips etc are, but most panels just clip on, you've just got to pull until you find where it's holding!).

Thanks for response. I do have those guides as a starter. Does anyone have access to the instructions for specific OEM wiring loom part number 1648389280? Thanks again

Hi, did you get this fitted ok? I'm planning on buying this also so am looking for advice on installation.
Is it truly plug and play or does it need coding?

P.S. which side panel does it get installed under?

Thanks

Hi, I did get it all fitted to the car. The loom did work but you do need to get it coded in. Our car did actually have most of the towing loom installed from factory so no need to take some of the interior apart, but the kit I purchased was needed for the towing ecu etc. It’s quite a job to fit a towbar on these cars. If you have any specific questions I can try and help. The car tows nice.

A few points to add

Make sure you cut enough bumper away around towbar - I was maybe a bit neat with it and it cost me time.

Rear foot sensor for boot needs ‘tweaked’ to fit once you cut the bumper for towbar. Some cable ties can help with that.

Be careful pulling bumper away around the rear light areas, lots of tabs etc that could break.

Check under passenger seat carpet for wiring loom connection - if its plugged in you probably have towing loom part installed. Also check up behind under rear bumper passenger side for the 2 plugs in my photo above. Will save you pulling interior apart. You will still need the boot panels taken off to install ecu etc.

If anyone has the OEM install instructions to post up that would be good future reference. I ended up downloading a heap of C5 Aircross ones from the big brands and using a combination of a few of them to work it out. PF Jones website has a lot of the manuals hosted.

I can access the OEM ones, but I generally won't post them up in the public Forum for obvious reasons, but would be able to forward it to you. The other reason is that there are literally hundreds of these because of the different vehicles and systems, each with unique instructions, so would not want anyone to follow advice for an incorrect / incompatible kit, as they are very specific.

If you still require the specific one for the kit you've fitted (as per the part number quoted), let me know, just provide the VIN. Please post your VIN in full without spaces - it will be automatically masked from public view after submitting your post & will only be visible to staff.

Hi guys, thanks for the responses on the 1680128880 wiring loom installation. I have since fitted everything (bar and wiring loom). I managed to get hold of all the PSA instructions which was a great help. Installation went well or so I thought. I've since taken it to a main dealer to get it programmed in but they couldn't talk to the wiring loom ECU. For some reason it's not fully working. The main lights and brakes work but not the fog or indicators etc. This is obviously strange and annoying. I wasn't expecting any issues as it's only slightly more fiddly than just plugging it in but not much more. Now I'll need to strip the interior panels back again and check things before the main dealer can assist but I'm trying to avoid that cost. Has anyone got any advice or had similar issues? One last thing, I used the small extension cable at the front but could have probably not used it as the cable would probably have reached I just thought it was better as that plug was so difficult to reach down the side of the dash. Mmcd87 did you use the small extension cable? Did you main dealer have any issues talking to the wiring ECU when it was programmed in etc? For reference regarding any replies I installed the loom with the car battery disconnected and am certain the connector block wiring is as per the instructions. Thanks

Hi, my car had the towbar wiring loom installed from factory. The connector was already under passenger seat, the harness already in place down side of the car. I only needed the ECU module and towbar wiring from the kit.

I did not use main dealer to code the car, phone around a few local towbar fitters and they should do it for an hours labour. They plug a computer into the cars obd socket under dashboard. The wiring loom and towing ecu does not work at all without coding which surprised me.

My local peugeot dealer does not install their own towbars and send cars to local towbar fitter. I’d suggest you do the same.

The units have to be programmed into the BSI for the correct ESP programme / function when towing is detected and of course reversing sensor deactivation etc., and for the correct operation of the lighting. The BSI talks to the trailer fuse box which is why there is a harness there ready for connection, but on some vehicles this must be wired in completely - it just depends on vehicle and build date.

Just to help anyone else with this, posting my experience here.

Self fitted (with a friend) OEM towbar and electrics for Citroen C5 Aircross. As has been mentioned, most of wiring was in already, which we only realised once we'd duplicated it. Initially only the running lights and brake lights worked. Took it to Citroen dealer where they coded it in and tested it, all fully working now.

Cost was £75 for coding/test. Other local dealers were quoting several times that price.
