Citroen Xsara Picasso tow bar wiring.

Unread post by jscadden »

Just fitted a towbar to the car to tow a small trailer.

The towbar came with a wiring kit which included relay for use when certain circuitry was installed on the car .

The relay supplied is a TEB7AS 7 Way Universal Relay including buzzer.
Is this a necessity on this vehicle or can I just install a buzzer for the indicators?

I can't advise on this kit, only the official PSA recommended products which are designed for integration with vehicle systems. PSA systems generally have s separate fusebox unit designed for the electrical towbar wiring that interfaces with the existing loom.

I have installed and wired several towbars over the years but this is the first time that a relay has been required other than to control wiring to control charging to a caravan.

I am only wiring for a trailer here.

It is necessary because they specify that they take the lighting signals and covert this into a 12V feed for the trailer lighting so it doesn’t take power from the lighting circuit on the car. That is why it is there and requires a 15a fused supply.

Of course it does not support vehicle ESP systems with a special towing programme which your vehicle probably has, being that it has ESP.

My previous car was a Citroen C8 which did have ESP. I can't find anything on this car to suggest that it has.

I'm only wiring for an unbraked trailer here but I will probably wire in the relay as long as I can get the side panel off easily.

If i remember right on the xsara picasso the genuine trailer harness (for single electrics lighting only) just literally plugs straight into the rear light clusters then a separate earth eyelet & this goes straight to the 7 pin socket. No fancy electronics.
