Berlingo Petrol Puretech engine fault and oil consumption issues

Hi all - first post

I have a berlingo mutispace from 2018. It is a 1.2 petrol with the pure tech flair engine. It has done less than 55k miles

Around a year ago we first encountered an issue where our car would go into limp mode and the on screen display would say ‘engine fault - get vehicle repaired’. The first time we took this to a Citroen specialist they said nothing was wrong but they replaced the cambelt.

Shortly after we had a service where our oil would have been topped up and it ran fine for a while before happening again and we required roadside assistance. The helpful chap read the diagnostics and said our oil was low. We assumed this was missed in the service, topped it up and all was fine again. I kept an eye on oil levels after and they seemed to be decreasing rapidly. The car broke down again shortly after. I went back to the garage we saw previously and we were told this was a known issue - a replacement rocker cover was fitted and oil topped up and we needed to drive 1000k miles to monitor oil use. Within a few weeks it was low again so we went back.

We now seem a bit stuck as the garage are saying we will unlikely get support from Citroen and calling Citroen direct they are saying they need the garage to diagnose and can’t commit to how much of the work they will cover until we know. The rep at the garage basically said the best thing would be to get rid of the car.

Seems weird given Citroen already advised and covered the first fix and we were running the <1000 mile check to prove the issue. Various timing belt and oil consumption issues also seem to be all over the internet for these cars and the engine type. Also seems to be quite a dangerous issue and given this is my family car we spent a good amount of our cash on and we really love, I am keen to resolve.

I have tried to talk about different options and explain my situation with Citroen but they seem to giving me a repeat, stock answer. I am worried about getting into an unknown string of costly diagnostics and repairs.

The car is just over 6 years old and low mileage.

Any similar experiences or advice on how to proceed please?

Thanks yes seems to be the case. Though the known issue seems to be timing belt fragments blocking oil. Ours seems to burn through it quickly.

Do you think it will complicate things if we use another Citroen garage at this point?

Second opinion can't hurt, I look after a friends Peugeot 3008 with a 1.2 puretech, It is on its 2nd belt under warranty they also fitted new oil pump at the last change. It also drinks oil, We are trying for compensation from selling dealer here in France as it was a known issue in the trade when my friend bought it a year ago, She tried to Part ex it for another car with same dealer but they have offered her 8500 less than she paid because of the puretech issue....I havent yet found what causes the oil consumption, it does not smoke at all and no leaks.... The Cat must be collecting the smoke and will probably fail next..... Good luck

Thanks yeah sounds the same as ours, no one seems to know where the oil is going and there seems to be no smoke indicating it’s coming from the exhaust either. Given it’s a known problem the support seems to be next to nothing on this. Has anyone had any luck escalating with Citroen to review as I don’t think the garage are going to do any more.

The oil specification is also critical on these 1.2s, essential for the timing belt, so make sure you have the exact correct type.

i have a ~2 yr old citroen berlingo xl.

1.2 petrol automatic.

ive seen the oil light flash up a few times asking for more oil. No idea were the oil is going???
In the last week Ive added about 400 ml and the warning has popped up again.

its only done 15 k miles!

havent been to the garage yet. hopig it will sort its self out, as I cant be bothere with the aggro from citroen. but looks ominous.

any advice?

Be aware that if you have the EB2 engine or one of its variants, then you'll likely have the belt in oil system. It is essential these are checked regularly, as they can shred. When this happens, debris comes apart and ends up in the oil strainer. Left unchecked and uncleared, this can lead to oil starvation and potentially catastrophic engine failure. So if you are getting any red oil lights - you seriously need to check.

If the belt is ok and it's just using oil, then this is another issue these engines are known for. You vehicle will be under warranty, so make sure you get them to check it.
