Info needed on a C5 Aircross Hybrid

Unread post by Steve Walsh »

Hi All

A friend of mine, she has a 3008 Peugeot ,1 of the cars I seem to be responsible for. It has the 1.2 Puretech and is now on its 2nd belt courtesy of Peugeot.
At the moment the belt seems to be ok, but is using quite a lot of oil, No leaks and doesnt smoke, so guessing cat is catching whatever it is burning.

She has lost faith in the car, and so have I.... She is now looking at a C5 Aircross Hybrid, We looked at one yesterday and when I opened the bonnet there was another Puretech engine, a 1.6 Turbo. VIN: VR7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] . Is this going to have the same belt issues?... It 1s a 2010 car with around 48000km 29000 miles.

Thanx for any advice

Hi Steve

No need to panic, this is not the same engine as the 3 Cylinder EB2 1.2. This has the EP6FADTXHP engine which is a 4 Cylinder and has a timing chain, not a belt.

I would check if the timing chain has been replaced since they can wear at low mileages if it is a vti engine. We had a 1.4 vti and that needed a new one at about 50k miles. It also used oil from when we got it on 12k miles.

I have found the Citroen diesels to be reliable so do not discount these.

This has a timing chain, not a belt Paul - so has no scheduled replacement and should outlast the engine.

Isn't the 1.6 the Prince engine as used in the Mini, I suggest you google it, and make an informed choice

Of course, this is a variant of the Prince engine and I make no claims as to the reliability of the engine itself as Richard intimated

Since about 2012 (coincidentally when BMW stopped using them), the reliability of the timing gear was improved to acceptable levels.

I would still not call them a great engine, there are too many plastic components that crack or distort with age, causing coolant and oil leaks.
