Peugeot Partner died on me

Has the title said,even after the bump a few weeks back the old girl drived ok,
Until today, drove 200miles today to start a new job tomorrow(contractor)
So after finding the site & decent parking decided to get some lunch,that's went the s... hit the fan,pulled over in a layby
A slight bang,little be of smoke or water vapour
Phone a lad who does the services on the van
He said maybe fuse for the starter motor,checked that fuse ok, so could be the starter its self ? But he said it needs hooking up to the fault finder lexia or the correct system
Any advice as always will be much appreciated
Battery died on me also,but needs a charge.
Getting abit nippy now so cant get home and cant get to the new job at present, stranded
Oh just over aweek ago the belt went plus the adjuster..

Hate to say it, but my guess is part of the old aux belt has got in the timing cover and has now pulled the cambelt off....

Dont no if am trying to be positive or praying it isn't,
But I know that you are a very knowledgeable/ expert on here Richard,would that mean it knackered then and what would it involved to be 100% sure?..

Starter motor wouldn't cause a bang, if turn the key and battery is good then hearing a tik Tik noise would point at starter motor issue.

Belt failure is not unknown on this engine, but you'll need to get it inspected to see. If it has gone, usually a new cam, rockers and belt will fix it, occasionally they drop a valve if you're unlucky.

Anyway thanks again for you input but will have to wait and see a garage to inspect it as the recovery will do only one recovery.
Would the Diagnostics tool help,
Not sure if this has any bearing RichardW ,but pushed the van back, with hardly any effort and it rolled smoothly

I went to Steve's van today to see if I could help in any way. The main battery was flat but even after connecting to my car with jump leads the starter motor did not operate at all. There was just a very faint click from the fusebox. So I couldn't tell whether the engine would even spin over.

Unfortunately when I took my Diagbox out the VCI was missing so I couldn't look for any codes.

A recap of the incident. Steve was cresting over a slight hill into a downward incline when there was a sound from the engine like a pop or a phut. It seemed to come from the LH side of the engine (RH side as viewed from the driver's seat) and the engine stopped. There was some smoke but this stopped fairly quickly.

Steve was able to coast down the hill into a layby where he came to rest. The starter motor did not operate when the key was turned so we don't know if the engine can even turn over.

Steve has to decide what to do. As I understand it, his recovery service will take him to a local garage but is unlikely to take him 200 miles back home! He's currently stranded about half way between Runcorn and Warrington. He needs to decide whether to cut his losses or invest in a repair as his 14 year-old van has had several thousands of pounds spent on customising. What he could really do with is a trusted garage in the area. I have no idea of any but maybe someone else does?

I think that's it. If I've got anything wrong I'm sure Steve will put me right.

To check if the engine is seized without a starter, jack a front wheel off the ground, put it in 5th and turn the jacked wheel by hand. Are there 4 equal compression strokes?

It was hissing down yesterday and it's a shallow layby on a busy main A-road anyway so it would be a brave test.

Went out today and did a few more tests. The first thing to say is that the sequence of events above is wrong. This is the correct one:

Steve drove down the road and into the layby without a problem. It was only when he stopped the van, with the engine still running, that he heard the soft bang from the engine compartment. That was when the smoke, or possibly water vapour, wafted out. A warning light came up on the dashboard and Steve then turned the engine off. It was after that that he found the starter motor would not respond to the key.

I was able to jack the car up and try turning a wheel with 5th gear engaged. It wasn't the easiest thing to check but I didn't feel any difference in the cylinder compressions as I turned the engine over.

I had the VCI for the Diagbox this time and ran the diagnostics. The battery is not great on the laptop but I got some interesting readings. This is the full code list before clearing-

I think the interesting one is the Starter Control Relay fault. Does this mean the BSM is toast?

The VIN is VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] for code identification. I presume the BSM is very NLA by now.

Any chance of a wiring diagram for the starter motor and starting circuitry?
