It doesn't look official, so an aftermarket something or other! Possibly a sensor of remote garage or gate opening?

OK sounds very possible
Do you think I can remove it without causing any trouble elsewhere?
Any idea where wiring would be connected?
Thanks

Could it possibly be a tracker? Seems weird that it's wired in and wired in neatly.

Have you recently bought the car? Is there a makers name on the black box?

Its the GPS/GSM aerial for the Smartnav system made by trafficmaster, its a dealer fit accessory system & wasn't really that good. The screen was either fitted at the base of the drivers A pillar or by the middle heater vents.
Tomtom was already way ahead of it when it came out.
The screen looked like this

Trafficmaster - now there's a name from the past - had that on my C5 and even my Xantia IIRC and yes it was totally crap back then too. I remember seeing the little blue boxes on some motorway bridges for it.

There will also me an external mic normally mounted at the top of the A pillar, there will be a big external speaker & a black control unit with a SIM card in it.

It was a bit of a ridiculous system, you could press the button to call an operator & ask them where the nearest fuel station etc was & they could input the destination to the satnav system for you to start directing you there, after the 1st year you had to pay a subscription.
