Hi good people, hoping someone can shed some light on this....Bit of a long story!
An elderly friend has a2010 3008 2.0hdi which was starting and running fine after having a faulty injector replaced. The car was then parked up in daytime. The following day a neighbour said that the headlights had been on overnight, (only headlights, not tail lights!). Needless to say, the battery was flat and the car would only unlock with the key, (not remote fob). When trying to replace the battery with a fully charged one, as soon as the second battery lead made contact with the battery the engine immediately starts to crank over WITHOUT the key in the ignition! I've tried with the key in and turned to position 2, but it is the same. Headlights, (only), also come on. Obviously I can't do a diagnostic check as the engine just keeps cranking. the car will fire with a squirt of easy start, but won't keep running as there is no fuel getting through! Nothing has been touched, other than changing the battery), since the car was parked and he was told the headlights were on overnight! Has anyone got any bright ideas please! Cheers.

These should be a starter fuse in the under bonnet fuse box - in fact my money would be on a fault in here, it water has got in.

Thank you Richard for the fuse info, will check it out. Just wondering why that would make the headlights come on?

Does the keyfob have a centre button and does this operate the headlights?
Regardless the first thing I would try is a BSI reset.

Hi Paul, Not sure if the key fob has a centre button, I'm not with the car!, but I looked up how to do the BSI reset and I can't follow the steps because the minute the battery is connected the engine cranks, I can't open the windows as I can't turn the ignition on!!

You will have to remove the main lead to the starter ..........
