replace clutch and flywheel 308SW T9 1.6 bluehdi

Unread post by BVL »

Hi all,

I want to replace the clutch on my 308SW T9 1.6 bluehdi now i was wondering did anybody do that job themselves ?

The stealer charges 1600 euro for the job but i can buy the parts myself for 485 euro's ( valeo 837106 DM flywheel and clutch )

I do have all the tools needed for the job, but would it be possible to finish the job in 1 day ? how long would it take for someone who doesn't do it for a living.

Also few other things i was wondering and cann't seem to find info about,

1. do you apply tread lock to the bolts when assembling the pressure plate ?

2. Is it wise to replace the crank seal behind the flywheel even if it would look ok ?

3. When i undo all the bell housing bolts, can i leave the gearbox just hanging on its shaft or do i need to take the weight with a chainhoist or something.

Any feedback appreciated ,

Greetings from holland.

It’s a big job BVL so much has to be dismantled to get to the gearbox. It could take a professional 6 to 7 hours to do the job SAFELY, using a vehicle lift, engine support and help lifting the gearbox.
I think you should think about this if attempting to do the job on your own, with just a jack and axle stands. If something went wrong you will have a car in bits stuck on your driveway.
For piece of mind can I suggest you find a small independent workshop, preferably a Peugeot/Citroen specialist to do the job.
It will still be expensive, (cheeper than a Dealer though) , they may be willing to you supplying the parts.

If using a garage to do the work I would get them to also supply the parts. If you supply them and there is a problem later you will find it difficult to get them to give any warranty other than just labour but any problems with the parts and you will still need to pay for labour again as well as parts. Make sure any pattern parts you provide are correct as well, they may not be as good as dealer supplied ones.

When I have removed gear boxes before I have used an engine crane to take the weight of it since they are heavy. I would not let it hang on the input shaft as you remove the gear box since the shaft could get bent/damaged. I would not hope to lift/handle the gear box out/back into place just by hand without a crane/hoist without suffering back damage. A clutch alignment tool helps when fitting it back.

You might need to replace the drive shaft seal if it gets damaged, also you will need a couple of litres of gear box oil since it will be lost when the drive shaft is removed. If you measure how much is lost then only need to add that much, otherwise drain it all out and add the correct amount (there is likely no level plug being a PSA car).

When the old bolts are removed you will be able to see if they have thread lock on them.

Thanx for the replies,

I can get hold of a decent place to work inside, and probably also an engine lift to suspend the gearbox.

Biggest problem would be that i brake something and my can is stuck in pieces.

The problem is that my car shifts not smooth between 1st and 2nd gear which is really annoying in city traffic and roundabouts to shift back to 2nd from 3th.

I suspect its the clutch is not fully clearing, also i think the clutch operation i a bit heavy.

The only way to find out is open the clutch, but as the car has done 145000 km its nearing end of life anyway thanks to the great design of dual mass flywheel.

A symptom of a worn clutch is often it will slip so going up a hill the engine revs will increase but not the road speed. If it is not disengaging when pressing the clutch pedal I would first check the master and slave cylinders are not leaking and bleed them to change the brake fluid in them - this should be done every 2 years anyway when the brake fluid is changed.

Hi all,

I found some posts about gear linkage adjustment that might solve my gear change problems, just need to find the info of how to do it on my car.

If that saves me from changing my clutch too early il be more than happy.
