C5 X7 Heater / cooling fan makes intermittent, intense noise

Hallo all!

After hitting a nasty, unavoidable pothole - the heater fan in my C5 X7 suddenly began making a grinding metallic noise. It dissipates when i turn the fan speed up, then comes back again after i lower the fan speed. It does not sound good at all, and I am worried the fan needs to be changed.

Are there any recommended brands specifically that is recommended? I see there is some Nissens and others fan units that is not too costly.
Is changing the heater unit a complicated affair? I have changed one in my daughters Golf, and it was not too demanding- even for me!
