2017 1.6 citroen spacetourer Overheating

Unread post by Les-227 »

Driving today and the heater in the car was blowing cold air and then temp went up to 100°c then quickly back to 90°c, then did it again slightly warmer. Stopped and checked to see the expansion tank empty. Let her cool down a bit then filled her up again to get me back home. Heater worked straight away and never above 90°c for the 5 miles back home. Checked the tank again and it was very bubbly and not much water in the tank but no water in the oil. Suggestions very welcome.🙏 their was plenty water in the tank last Saturday.

Possibly the head gasket has failed or there is a coolant leak somewhere.

Check under the thermostat housing for leaks (end of the engine above the gearbox) - seems to be a common failure on this engine. We had to have ours done last year - it's not cheap unfortunately.

That's a possibility. Can't see anything from above or from below. When under the car it seems to be coming down both sides off the engine, running over the exhaust at the front.

Engineer has looked at it and thinks its the gasket for the thermostat housing so that's the first thing to try.

I think a new thermostat would be good, they don't just fail, they work one journey then play up on another.
If any further work is done then it would be good protection to prevent a repeat scenario.

Hope that helps.
Andy.
If it can happen it will.

It's running outside the engine is the problem, if you watch the YouTube video I've uploaded.

Bloody water seal on the oil cooler, no way of seeing it till exhaust was off.
