This shouldn't happen, but ............ it does .............
The secondary (safety catch) is spring loaded - not mechanically engaged like the old type - and the spring gets lazy so it does not always come across far enough, leaving the bonnet liable to come 'loose'.
It is like this because of a failure with the primary catch which is the hook that hangs down from the bonnet to engage the lock in the bodywork. What you can't see, because it is under the soundproofing, is that this hook is riveted to the inner skin of the bonnet. This skin is aluminium and it corrodes away so the hook is no longer firmly attached to the bonnet. When you press the bonnet to close it you get a 'bouncy' feel with no positive 'clunk'. This is because you are simply bending the hook and not engaging the catch.
Eventually. the hook doesn't go down far enough to allow the safety catch to engage.
At 40mph there is a big bang and your road view disappears. You can see under the bonnet and the windscreen doesn't break so it isn't a disaster, but it scares the crap out of you. You can repair the hook mount :
The bonnet hinges tear up the screen pillars, which makes a mess of the cosmetics. A disappearing bonnet hook mount isn't a great Peugeot design feature.

So....
Sounds like the safety catch needs a proper safety catch of its own!

A guy at work has a generic Renault/Citroen van that has a none catching bonnet. Is it a PGA thing?

Some years ago my wife's 2014 C4 hdi was in the local Citroen garage for a service.
When she collected it the boss told her that it was subject to a recall for the reason in this thread & showed her they'd 'fixed the problem' by sticking pre-cut plastic protector film on the bonnet around the catch to avoid corrosion.

Our 2015 C4 had the bonnet recall and what looked like a grease filled sticker put on the catch area. Our 2016 Cactus had a bonnet recall where an extra metal strip was riveted onto the bonnet catch.
Looks as if I need to check the 308 bonnet regularly and maybe put some grease on it.

The telltale is in the bubbling visible under the paintwork on the underside of the bonnet, but no rust. The aluminium underneath has corroded away to white oxide and falls apart.
