rear speakers

Unread post by Dekzion »

Yes, still got the 106 zest2 1.5 derv 2001 !
I'd like to go way over the top and install speakers in the rear door covers! Has anyone done this please? Is it an arse of a job? The wires aren't in there already I presume (just got the speakers and it's far too cold and wet out there.)
I may even go mad and put a rearview camera in there too, but yet again wondering where to run the wires.

I can't say as i've installed speakers in rear doors for some years (presume yours is a 5 door?) but apart from the obvious running of the wires from the head unit through the vehicle there's also the issue of wiring going into the rear doors so you'd need something flexible much like front doors have in order to protect and guide the wiring when the door is opening and closing. Does the car have the original head unit? i'd check that has suitable outputs for additional speakers first. You will also have to cut holes in the door frame making sure it's not a structural area and there's no front seatbelt pretensioner wiring etc (not sure if your call will have that or not) where your cutting which will also need painting to aid protection, make sure what ever you use to sleeve/protect the wiring fits the hole you've cut snuggly or rain water will get in and rot your car out from underneath you.

As for the rear camera as your car won't have curtain airbags you can run the cable under the roof lining for that as it'll be more out of harms way but don't stick it to the rear window, opening and closing the tailgate does the camera's cable no good and you'll also have an unsightly loop of cable where it flexes/moves whilst the tailgate is being opened/closed. I have rear camera in my car and ive stuck it to the (felt) roof lining with a 3M sticky pad & not had an issue with it coming off. Also make sure your heated rear window works and the camera is mounted within the swept area of the rear wiper or it'll be no good to you with a window covered in condensation, rain, snow or ice, basically that camera needs a clear view 24/7.
Music keeps me going.

Thanks for the reply quintet, yes it's a five door, the rear doors are all ready for speakers but I think it was the 'budget' model so they weren't included, just like it only had one fog rear and one reversing light due to them not connecting the second ones (cheapskates!) They are now though.
The rear door covering has the speaker mesh and the mounting for a 5 inch speaker (complete with screw holes) and was covered by a sticky foam insulation plate. As it's got central locking there is the flexi tube that goes from the pillar to the door to carry those wires.
Father Christmas has bought me a very nice new head unit so I can watch movies whilst I wait at hospitals etc. (not plugged in yet as I'm not sure if the latest tech still blows icu's if you don't connect all the speakers like the 8 tracks etc. used to) I'm not so much worried about keeping my Pug original, I want it to have useful additions of the modern age, I do look after it very well servicing twice a year etc. and for the last 3 years the MOT guy has wanted to buy it off me!
Thanks for the thoughts on the camera. I've gone for a wifi enabled, Should be easy but fiddly as the hatch has high level and heater wires in a flexi tube (I'll figure it)
Might not get this Xmas present finished until Easter
