Hi. Fred is leaking from the coolant pump end of the hose. Radiator end is fine, though filthy!
I know that the radiator bayonet fitting is a git. So wondering if I should even try to replace the hose or cut the pump end off and join it. What do you reckon?

If the bayonet end is good and not weeping, I'd be inclined to leave it be and splice in a new bit to the pump end spigot...
Are you sure it's leaking though? The plastic manifold block the pipe attached to is prone to leaking from engine block joint. There's an O ring between it and the block and it's not hard to replace. A lot easier than fighting with a bottom hose bayonet!

Hmm. Well I thought I felt a cut on the back of the hose, and it feels crunchy. I haven't undone it yet but I will have a look again, especially at the O ring. Thanks.
Jim, have you still got Bluebell? What's the suspension like? I've been driving Gwin, my AX, a lot instead of the xantia as she's been poorly and I've been lazy. Not a fair comparison I know, but I've bruised my coccyx! I thought it was just me but my mum's bruised hers too. We've got gel cushions in Gwin now! I suspect the suspension is high at the front but she doesn't feel bouncy.

Jim`s suggestion to check the plastic manifold reminded me of fixing one such on a BX. The leak proved to be because a thin part of the wall had broken out, allowing the O ring to partially escape. Not only was the price of the part extortionate, but there were none in stock either.
The solution was to bend up some 3mm (or eighth) steel rod (other metals might be better) into a ring to fit the O ring groove, apply enough silicone instant gasket, and refit. Make the ring with minimal gap when in place, and position the gap in a thicker section of the plastic moulding away from the damage.
It gave no further trouble in the several more years I had the car.

I had another look at the hose, definitely got a crack in it. I decided to have a go at changing it, since I worry that the rubbers started to perish. Moved the windscreen washer tank and that was enough to get at the radiator bayonet fitting. Must admit I thought bayonet meant twisty but it just pushes in. I was very lucky that with no rust it went well. Only been for a tiny drive, but seems OK.
