concerns re purchased car mileage

Morning , I have just put a deposit down on a citroen C3 , I checked mot history and it was sound , however I have just noticed a discrepancy re the mileage as below

46,065 miles


18 October 2018
PASS
Mileage
66,737 miles



1 November 2017
PASS
Mileage
44,396 miles

All the other mileage appears about average , however you can see from reading here that the mileage goes up and then reduces again by 20.000 miles ,
this is an obvious concern , Is there any way that I can check if this was a genuine inputting error or should I just ask for deposit back.

That's a difficult one as on my last MOT the dozy tester entered completely the wrong mileage and added another 20k miles - but as I noticed it, I demanded they change it straight away. They did make the changes and issued a new certificate.

So either the last owner never bothered checking the MOT and the same has happened - or it has been clocked.

I wouldn't touch it without knowing what has happened. What about the the missing MOTs from 2019 to date? What do they say. If it has been off road since then, I'd also walk away...

If someone is going to knock some miles off the car they normally do it just before the MOT, surely no one is stupid enough to make the miles less from the last MOT when everyone knows the mileage is recorded & anyone can see it??
If it has been clocked then i cant imagine there is any actual way to tell for sure, these can have the mileage 'corrected' completely by OBD & no need to remove any parts off the car.
Most likely just been input wrongly i would think too, the problem will be when you come to sell it on & no one will touch it with a barge pole.

That is an error not a "clock"...... no logic to it.

It's possible it's a genuine reading if someone had a S/H speedo fitted which had a higher mileage and then had the mileage corrected (and I mean that in the proper sense) after the MOT.

most Electric speedos "correct themselves" to the figure in the ECU if it is higher than the replacement speedo pod. (Note:.....sadly I think the ECU also picks up on a high mileage speedo)

I'm just wondering where the last 3 years MOTs are? Do you have any past November 2021?
