If you've got an HDI and you let it stay in for 12500 miles, then you should use fully-synthetic. If, like me, you prefer to change at 5 to 6000, then you can get away with semi.

The lives of engine oils have nothing to do whether they are mineral, semi-synthetic or fully synthetic, the additive package is what determines the life of an oil. Whilst that is true a synthetic oil will require less additives than a mineral oil to acheive the same performance and typically synthetic oils are more expensive and have better additive packages than cheaper mineral oils. Personally, I would choose oil by API / ACEA ratings rather than whether it is mineral or synthetic.
I use a semi synthetic oil in my car I have tried mineral and fully synthetic oils, the fully synth oils are far too expensive to be replacing at 6000 mile intervals, and the semi-synth are cheap enough.
