Noisy td

Post by ohms69 »

Hi all,
My new BX is, for want of a better word NOISY!
It sounds very tappety and has some unusal characteristics with it.
When revved, the engine seems to take an age to come back down to idle, unlike any TD I've experienced before. It's very similar to a petrol engine in the way the revs drop...Almost as though it is of higher compression.
Powers good and aside from the noise and age for revs to drop performs superbly.
Any ideas?[;)]

Surely it will have higher compression than a petrol!
On a more helpful note, Try an oil change. Cars that are going to be sold don't det serviced and the oil runs out like water. It has always worked wonders on my XUD motors. Buy a new filter and some disgustingly cheap oil and change it again at 500 miles.
The lack of engine braking is due to the anti stall being set up wrongly. Haynes covers it in detail (Accurately, for a change.)

Tappety noise and slow run-down sounds like the timing belt change has been bodged to me and the pump is out. Once you've done the oil change, I'd 'whip' the timing belt covers off and check the alignment of the sprockets. Correct if necessary. If not, then check the valve clearances (not unkown for one to go wide), and after that get the actual pump timing checked (need a dial gauge, so prob best left to a diesel specialist).

Sounds to me (not that i've got that good hearing)like it's a little too advanced.
Try loosening the 3 nuts and 1 bolt/nut and pulling the pump towards you.
When I was fart assing with the timing on my BXTD I kept it running and it makes a fair difference to the noise level when too advanced.[:o)]
