xantia tie bar
My 99 T reg 1.9TD automatic hatchback appears to not have a rear suspension subframe tie bar (approx 3/4 in. dia x 3 ft. long, two bolts each end.)it seems strange for any one to have removed this, automatic gearbox has been replaced, but exhaust is original,is the tie bar essential, and/or was it dropped on some models.???

No, there is a tie bar as well as the anti-roll bar. The tie bar is a solid round metal bar held on with two bolts at each end, the ends have been flattened where the bolts go through. The bar bolts to the two lower parts of the subframe somewhere below the pivot arm bearings.
I'm not entirely sure of its function except to keep the two lower parts of the subframe the same distance apart, and probably to maintain rear suspension geometry during cornering.
I had to losen this tie bar when I replaced the exhaust front section on both Xantias, its probably possible to avoid removing the tie bar if you take the back box off instead, but for me removing the tie bar seemed easier at the time.
