two fans

a quick question
on the pug 306 TD there are two fans in front of the radiator. When they come on should both come on at the same time or does one come on the the other if needed?
the reason for asking is that a rock came off a lorry and wedged itself in the front spoiler just in front of the fans and I'm not sure if it's damaged the fan, or whether it's normal for it not to come on when the other one does.
hopefully we got away lightly as it could have been a lot worse!

Check out this link, Go to the electrical section at top right, Then click on 306 cooling fans in the list on the left.
