306 rev counter - easy to fit?

Post by will16v »

I have a 306 and there is no rev counter - just a stupid clock that stopped at 10 to 7 and hasnt worked since - if i got a matching rev counter, would i need anything else to fir, and how hard is it to do?
Also, where can i get one for a '96 306 1.9d - one that corresponds with the engine?
Thanks in advance,
Will

Hi
You must use one out of a Diesel because these work of the alternator & are different to the petrol ones!
No idea if the wires are there already, someone on here might be able to answer that or ask at a Peugeot parts dept if there helpfull.
You can get clock sets from scrapyards or ebay, or someone on this forum might have one they no longer need.

Don't they run off the crank sensor?

Hi
Another problem ive just spotted, The Peugeot CD rom ive got says that 1996 was the change over year from speedo cable to eletronic speed sensor.
You need to check whats fitted to your car before trying to get another set of clocks.

Hi
1 of the diesel rev counters does work from the crank sensor the others dont.
You have a choice of 4 from the Peugeot cd rom.

Well, i think mine is the last of the old shape (registered in may/june ' 96), so would i only tell by taking the instrument panel off and seeing if the rev counter is worked by a big cable or a load of wires??
I really wanted one that matches the speedo - same font/grapic etc - do you think mine would be one of the four you mention?
are ther any pics on the CD rom

Hi
There are pictures on the cd rom, but they dont show the detail of any fonts/graphics just where the nuts & screws go to hold the clocks in & how many you need.
Take the clocks out & there will be a number on a little white sticker starting with 6100 & then some letters on the top left corner of the housing.
You can tell if you have a speedo cable by either taking the clocks out or looking for it where the speedo cable comes out the top of the little white speed sensor on top of the gearbox.

I thought they all ran off the crank sensor! Never seen a 306 with an alternator driven tacho, and I've seen a few, LOL.
