Xantia V6 sphere confusion

Post by xantiav6 »

Can anyone tell me the correct part number/volume/pressure for the spheres for a 1997 Xantia V6 Exclusive?
I was told that GSF do not sell them because they are unique to this model, but my car is fitted at the front with 96 238 949 and 96 181 131 (centre) which seem to be the standard hydroactive II spheres.
I suspect that my car is fitted with the wrong spheres because the ride is much firmer than I would expect.
TIA,
Mike

You may try the common corner softness check, when car is in normal height. Even in hard mode, it should still be easy to press down each corner slowly, to judge condition of wheel spheres.
With stopped engine, ignition off, all doors closed, the car should revert to hard (default) suspension mode. Once engine is running, but car parked, the suspension should be in soft mode, which means the extra center spheres are connected to provide an extra spring element for softness.
I suspect your V6 at front uses a special sphere spec, because of the heavier engine type. Your Citroen dealer should know at least.

Thanks for all the info.
If I have interpreted it correctly, my car should have 5721 76 front and 5276 09 front centre.
The 5276 09 has volume/pressure of 450/70, the 96 181 131 (currently fitted) is 450/75. Does 5 bar make a big difference in a centre sphere?
I have not been able to find the specs of 5721 76 on the web.

If your car is a saloon with automatic gearbox then you should have :
5271 76 is the front sphere.
5271 76 is 450/45 and have a multi-layer diaphragm.
5276 09 (450/70) is the front centre hydractive sphere
95 666 763 (400/62) is the main accumulator
5276 36 (400/30) is the rear sphere
96 045 530 (400/50) is the rear centre hydractive sphere
5293 04 (400/50) is the rear ant-sink sphere
5293 03 is the ant-sink sphere for non-hydractive cars
The centre-hydractive and accumulator spheres have no dampers built-in.
96 181 131 ???? is not mentioned in the Citroen suspension catalogue of 01/07/2002

Thanks for the extra info.
I checked the rear spheres on my car, and they also appear to be for a 4 cylinder VSX, the complete set is:
front corner: 96 238 949 (450/45/0.7) should be: 5271 76 (450/45/?)
front centre: 96 181 131 (450/75) should be: 5276 09 (450/70)
rear corner: 96 238 951 (400/30/0.6) should be: 5276 36 (400/30/?)
rear centre: 96 045 530 (400/50) correct part fitted
I am a bit confused by the 8 digit and 6 digit numbers, particularly when the specifications seem to be the same...
Any info on the orifice size for the V6 front and rear spheres?
Any recomendations as to which spheres I should change to the correct type to restore the ride quality? I am tempted to just change the front centre, as my main problem is with soft mode.

I checked with a citroen dealer, and the listed sphere for the front center is 95 669 124 (450/75). So what is the difference between that and 96 181 131 (450/75)??
I thought that the centre spheres had no damper elements.

Sorry but the part number quoted is not correct for the V6 - it has a separate listing. Emphasize that your car has the ES9J4 engine and 4HP20 gearbox (if indeed it has). They have quoted the standard Hydroactive xantia sphere in the number you have. I don't know the difference (but presume there is some since Cit bother to quote a different part no). This is the same part number as the Activa which may be throwing them.

I have resolved my confusion by buying a new set of front spheres.
The outer spheres which are labelled on the box as 5271 76, when you take them out of the box they are actually marked 96 238 949, whioch is the same as the spheres already fitted, so I returned these.
The centre sphere is labelled on the box as 5276 09, but the sphere is actually marked 96 281 798. AS this was different to the sphere fitted to my car, I just fitted this one, and it has greatly improved the ride comfort. It is probably now about the same as my previous 2.0 VSX. [8D]
BTW the operatives at my citroen parts counter were just as confused as me, so thatnks to everyone for your help.
