AX: speedo cable joint undone itself!

driving along... and the speedo just stops working! after a quick look at the cable etc i noticed the upper and lower sections of the cable had parted company! what would cause this? incorrect fitting??? its been fine since ive had the car, i just find it strange for it to !!!unscrew!!! itself?!

as far as i am aware it has never been changed, and it looks like the original part? im stumped! as long as it stayes working now i will be happy!

Came to think of it. The joint is a very fine thread. If the plastic retainer nut has cracked, the joint will part by vibrations.

i think it would be a good idea to change it asap then, planing on quite a few long journeys in the coming weeks, thanks for the advice,
