306 TD

Post by grattsim »

Hi, I'm considering buying a 306td R-reg upwards. Is there anything I should look for? What type of price should I be expecting to pay for one?

Some engines around the R and S reg age have been known to throw a conrod out of the block. Do a search on this and honestjohn for conrod, and you'll find the theory that it's oil related.
Other than that, check the service history, coolant level / condition, and usual checks.

look for regular servicing, good cambelt and tensioner history, anything 'suspect' in the history such as premature replacement of things such as track rod ends etc (indicator of bouncing off kerbs). Also if you opt for a hdi version check the cambelt and alternator pulleys, there was a known fault for them coming loose.
Other than that, give it a good test run, make sure it holds temp at about 85 - 90 degrees and that it is not pressurising the coolant.
