C4 Picasso 2012 - Various Issues

Unread post by Crystalyne »

Hey all,

Recently acquired a new (to me) C4 Picasso 2012. Seems like a nice car, although not without it's faults, so here goes:

VIN is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

So, to start off with, error codes from the car's ECU. MIL is not on, and car drives fine, so think these are all minor.
  • P0263 Cylinder 1 - Resetting of injector outside the tolerance.
  • P0266 Cylinder 2 - Resetting of injector outside the tolerance.
  • P1445 Additive adding - The quantity of additive injected into the particle emission filter has exceeded the maximum threshold. the particulate emission filter must be changed.
  • P1A99 Stop and Start - Electrical network voltage too high
P1A99 I think is a red herring, as I had a battery charger on when I took the code reading, so this is likely because of that.

P1445 is an odd one, as a quick google of the code showed that it represented just vaguely DPF and DPF fluid related faults, but the code itself is a bit of a catch all. The DPF does not seem to be blocked; the engine runs fine and seems to have good flow through the exhaust to the rear, nor is there any hissing sounds or obvious exhaust leaks. The car does not emit any smoke either, even at cold start.

P0263 and 266 I don't have any clue on.

Blower motor seems to be knackered. It only works on maximum, and only sometimes. I've heard that this may be related to the windscreen scuttle drains being blocked, which does seem to be the case on this car (dampness inside the footwell) - What's the best way to unblock these? Also, how do I get to and remove the blower motor?

Many thanks!

The injector codes probably mean that they are a bit leaky, and the ECU has reached its limit of injection duration to smooth out the running. They may have been replaced and not coded properly.

P1445 is just a pre-programmed limit for ash in the DPF. If the pressures are OK and it is regenning OK, then you can just tell it that it's had a new DPF and it will go away.

Scuttle drains are accessed from under the front wheel arches - if you jack it up and pull back the bit of liner behind the spring, then you will see the drain tube, pull them out and clean them out, and the hole in the scuttle. Blower is above the throttle pedal - remove the trim panel, and then it's pretty simple to extract it. It probably has a built in transistor based controller.

Your Engine ECU monitors the life of the DPF via estimations and calculations of the amount of Cerine from the additive fluid that has been passed through the system and accumulated in the particle filter. These deposits cannot be burned off and along with engine debris and other material will ultimately block the filter. This is telling you that the amount in grammes of additive has reached the amount considered to change the DPF. Normally, you would have it deep cleaned and advise the engine ECU that this has been done and this will reset the recording.

Here are your fault descriptors:
Fault Code: P0263
Description of Fault: No. 1 cylinder : Injector resetting outside tolerance. Difference of more than 0,8 mg/stroke between the pilot injection and the flow reference value.
Conditions for Fault to clear: The following conditions have to be met:
- Engine hot, water temperature exceeding 70 °C
- External air temperature greater than 0°C
- Gear higher than 3rd
- Vehicle speed higher than 40 km/h
- Perform long decelerations without braking (Between 2500 and 1500 rpm)
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: -
Symptoms:
  • Jerking/stalling
  • Engine acceleration at wrong time
  • Noise
  • Slightly higher fuel consumption
  • Starting problem
  • Smoke from the exhaust
  • Lack of power
Suspect Areas:
  • Fuel injector 1
  • Injector classification
  • Poor quality of the fuel or type of fuel
  • Fuel return
  • Inlet valve - Exhaust valve - Spring - Seal
  • Piston - Piston rings - Shaft - Cooling system
  • Connecting rod

Fault Code: P0266
Description of Fault: No. 2 cylinder : Injector resetting outside tolerance. Difference of more than 0,8 mg/stroke between the pilot injection and the flow reference value.
Conditions for Fault to clear: The following conditions have to be met:
- Engine hot (Coolant temperature above 70°C)
- External air temperature greater than 0°C
- Gear higher than 3rd
- Vehicle speed higher than 40 km/h
- Perform long decelerations without braking (Between 2500 and 1500 rpm)
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: -
Symptoms:
  • Jerking/stalling
  • Engine acceleration at wrong time
  • Noise
  • Slightly higher fuel consumption
  • Starting problem
  • Smoke from the exhaust
  • Lack of power
Suspect Areas:
  • Fuel injector 2
  • Injector classification
  • Poor quality of the fuel or type of fuel
  • Fuel return
  • Inlet valve - Exhaust valve - Spring - Seal
  • Piston - Piston rings - Shaft - Cooling system
  • Connecting rod

Fault Code: P1445
Description of Fault: Additive adding : The quantity of additive injected into the particulate emission filter has exceeded the maximum threshold. The particulate emission filter must be changed. The volume free in the particle filter is not sufficiently large. Necessary to replace the particle filter at the next service interval.
Conditions for Fault to clear: -
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: -
Symptoms:
  • No effects immediately perceptible to the customer
Suspect Areas:
  • Particle emission filter at the end of its service life

Fault Code: P1A99
Description of Fault: Stop and start: Electrical network voltage too high. Addition of a voltage source: Voltage above 16 V.
Conditions for Fault to clear:
  • Ignition on
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
  • Automatic restarting impossible following stopping of the engine (Requires restarting of the engine using the key)
Symptoms:
  • Problem with automatic restarting of the internal combustion engine
  • Absence of automatic stopping of the internal combustion engine
  • Malfunction of the Stop and Start switch or its LED
Suspect Areas:
  • Battery
  • Onboard network

Hey all,

Many thanks for your help!

I cleared the codes via my scan tool (and the FAP app!), all have gone aside from the P1445, which I expected.

WRT the blower motor - I have taken off the plastic panel to get at the motor, but before I take it off, wanted to do a sanity check - The motor will work at full speed (seems to be working consistently now since I unblocked the scuttle drains yesterday and things have dried out in the interior!), but not at any other speed - so, in the image below, any setting below the setting in the photo doesn't work. Is that what's expected when the blower resistor has packed up?

Image

With the DPF code - I don't have access to Diagbox myself, so I can't reset the code (fair enough), but in terms of the actual health of the DPF itself - as far as I can tell it's in good health, the DPF pressure reading is around 4-5 mBar at idle and peaks at 61 when I did an acceleration test. I'll attach a screenshot of the FAP readings so someone who knows more than me can take a look!

Image

How do those numbers look? Okay, or is it in need of cleaning?

I've never had the Start / Stop working on this car when I've driven it - would that P1445 code prevent the start / stop system working?

Many thanks!

Hey all,

Another question for you - I've noticed that the sunblind on the drivers side doesn't latch in place, and won't stay down when driving. I think I've narrowed the problem down to a little plastic piece that's broken off - is there any way to replace it so the blind will lock in place?

Thanks!
