Possible turbo and injector problems

Hi all, dispatch 07 1.6 hdi. First problem, white smoke on cold start, I know I have faulty glow plugs but before I replace them can someone confirm if they are used in warm ambient conditions, if not I guess an injector problem. second problem is I think a run away turbo, several times I have revved to about 4000 revs and it has hiccuped then ran away with lots of crap coming out of exhaust before returning to normal after several seconds, I removed the intercooler and it had a t spoon of oil in it. Any ideas?

Few thoughts on what reported:
white smoke may just be steam / water vapour condensing out, more noticeable at this time if year (on the assumption it is not MASSES of white smoke - like some sort of Dick Dastardly escape device - then may be nothing to worry about)

The reving to 4000, is that under your control or doing itself without touching the throttle pedal?
No direct experience (thankfully!!) but diesel run away from failed turbo basically it'd pay not respect to the normal rev limiter and would be going as fast as it possibly could generally until runs out of oil and/or something significant breaks like a rod through side of the block. It's hypothetically possible it's running away a tiny amount but not enough to "self sustain" (i.e. normally more rpm = more oil flow = more into intake = more fuel so engine spins faster and so on)

But given only teaspoon of oil in the intercooler I'd say you were nowhere near that scenario. Any oil from turbo has to pass through intercooler (or air doser, think an '07 would not be new enough for when this was deleted. My '07 C4 1.6 had the doser) bit of oil is normal. PCV also contributes oil to intake.

Brief amount of crap out the exhaust with a lot of revs is pretty normal (more so the more gently the car/van is used normally - soot accumulated in the exhaust suddenly dislodged by big flow rates)

Hi Matt, thanks for reply, white smoke has a fuely smell about it, 4K revs is by my control, when it runs away the smoke plume is huge not just like the soot out when I floor it for the first time.

Hmm white smoke which would indicate fuel rather than oil......also glow plugs are not used on start up above 20c I believe. Cold weather would allow alot of fuel into the engine as the faulty glow plug wouldn't be able to ignite the diesel and then come out as white smoke.

Thanks Ryan, the temperature required for glow plugs is one of the things I was after, cheers
