2001 xsara picasso hesitation.

Hi all,

First post, and i have had a look at other topics but am still stumped, so apologies for the long ish post.

Ive had my picasso about a week now, previous owner was straight with me it hesitates while accellerating, and sure enough on test run a small flat spot at around 50 mph, and that was it. Fast forward not even a week later and ive already had to have the rac out as engine light came on, it was bogging down then running rough.

Rac man ran 3 different diagnostics systems over it, and between them came up with the following (in order):
P0130
P0134
P0135
P0141
P0440
P0444

Previous owner did say it has had a new charcoal filter, and looking at it i would agree. Also having been under the car it has had both oxygen sensors replaced recently.

Is there anything else i can look for as to what it may be? As looking those codes up those bits pretty much cover it.

Knowing exactly what engine is fitted to your Picasso will help diagnose this issue...

P0130 O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
P0134 O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
P0135 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

Looking at these fault codes it would point to the work being done you have found. Have the fault codes been deleted after the work was done so some are not old codes and do you know if parts from Citroen were used or copy parts ? A check of the wiring would also be useful. You could do with a diagnostic to see how the O2 sensors are working but I think they are not used before the engine warms up so on start up it might run better for a short time. I had to replace the purge valve on a petrol Astra and the check to see if it was faulty involved removing it and if it could be blown through it was faulty.

Regarding the parts i have no idea, as i have literally had it a week. It ran home fine but since wednesday it has been bad. I put some cat cleaner in last night, it is slightly better in the sense it doesnt bog down as often, but thats it. I have also noticed its eating fuel and running really rich to the point you can smell it.

I'm gunna say it because I can, MAF, unplug sensor see what happens, it'll either improve or not, let's face it it's 22years old, sometimes the simple stuff is the answer, as both Tearing and myself have found out recently

No MAF on a petrol Xsara Picasso.

You really need it on live data to see what the oxygen sensors are doing.

Found a couple of bits earlier, the coil pack wasnt even bolted in, and i found this lurking once i took the top cover off as well. Its fixed with a temporary fix (gaffer tape) but at this stage so be it.

Further update, i cleaned the map sensor and its running a lot better, only 1 bog down all day. However plugged it in again, and these are still coming up.

Hi all,

Right i think i'm getting closer, however some on here with vastly more knowledge will tell me otherwise probably.

Have just replaced the fuel filter, which was made in china, and whos contents when i blew it back out into a tray were black.

Checked the pipe arrowed green, from purge valve to inlet, sucking fine towards inlet. However checked red arrowed pipe, from charcoal filter to ? (I assume tank), and nothing. My money is now on dodgy purge valve.

Yes, the purge valve is between the charcoal canister and the top of the fuel tank.

Easy to eliminate, just plug (temporarily) both sides of the purge valve and see if there's any difference...

Plugging the purge valve might not be as easy as thought, on the Astra I did the pipes to the purge valve were a plastic shrink fit so would not remove without damaging them. Fortunately for the new valve I had some rubber petrol pipe and clips that could be used instead.
