Delayed throttle response

Hi,
Any thoughts on a 'delayed throttle repsponse' on an '97 2.0i Xantia?
There is a distinct delay in the engine speed dropping as I lift off the throttle; additionally, the tickover speed seems to have gone up to around the 1000-1200 rate at around the same time.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

i guess its a turbo diesel and what his going on about is the throttle damper

My guess is, it's a dry or frayed cable problem.. on a Volantia [:D]

I'll go with the throttle damper as well - but a 1.8 16v Xantia.

Noticed you edited your first posting GDP - but I'm sure you mean a '97 model [:)]
Do you have any other symptoms, like the engine management fault lamp coming on ?
How is cold starting ?
Initially I'd suspect a simple mechanical problem with the throttle flap axle or the throttle cable. It might be that simple a spray of WD40 the correct spot is all you need.

Taipan -
The throttle flap is located in the throttle body - which looks a bit like - and takes the place of - the carburettor on earlier cars.
The reason why I suspect throttle cabling this time, is that the throttle response is <i>delayed</i>, no desceiptions on weird engine rpm's ghosting around.
The throttle potientiometer would be located approx mid on the throttle body, exactly opposite to where the throttle cable is attached. It's a flat device.
The stepper motor is a somewhat clumpsy device, located lower down on the throttle body, having a moving rod that pushes on the throttle flap, inside the throttle body.
