406 Speedo Not Working

i've just bought a cheap peugeot 406 turbodiesel, it's a 1996 model and it's got a sagem speedo. Problem is the speedo doesn't work at all and while the mileometer is showing 120k, the numbers aren't changing at all, is this a known problem or has the binacle got to come out--thanks in advance

have a look at the road speed sensor on the back of the gearbox,check the connector condition,its a 3 pin connector it should have an ignition live feed & a good earth a two of the pins,the other pin is the signal wire to the instrument panel,its more likely this sensor rather than the speedo head.

Wheeler's right - I've seen this myself on a friend's 406. The sensors seem to be the weakest link.
The car is getting on a bit so check the connectors and wiring first before spending any money.
