How to remove nearside driveshaft Citroen Dispatch 2012/change transmission seals

Post by dispatch2012 »

Hi. I will check back for replies.

Any info on nearside driveshaft removal might be useful to others too: I've searched online and youtube but nothing for nearside shaft.

The Haynes video on youtube shows drivers side, which is different: theres a bearing retaining clamp that Haynes removes for drivers side.

The nearside looks different and I don't want to be randomly undoing bolts going into the gearbox.

I've undone the hub to shock bolts, swung the hub out and got the wheel end of driveshaft out of the hub.

I don't want to just yank the inner end out the gearbox incase it damages bearing/oil seal . Its moved enough for gear oil to drip out.

Haynes video recommends changing shaft seals while shaft out. Are the old seals tricky to remove?

Getting shaft out because both cv boots are split.
Lowest price from - I think - partsinmotion was about £75 for shaft. Europarts lists several different shafts all slightly different lengths. Most over £100. One place was £500.

Planning to just change boots, unless they add up to too much. All the parts sites list different size boots too, so I'll measure boots/shaft and take it from there, unless someone here knows the ins and outs of this.

Thanks for reading. Any clear answers might help more than me.

By the way, the hub nut size is 35mm apparently.

It just pulls out... you will lose half the gear oil. Only use 75W/80 to refill.

The seal may be behind a plate, otherwise you can just lever it out with a screwdriver.

Thanks for reply Richard. Are you definite ie you've done this? Sorry to question your advice but as mentioned one online video for the other shaft mentioned taking bearing clamp off.

Edit: looks like theres only a clamp on drivers side according exploded parts diagram. Sorry to query your advice, thanks again.

The offside has a clamp to retain the intermediate bearing but as the nearside doesn't have this bearing, there is nothing else retaining it, It just pulls out.

Hi. Thanks for advice. I got shafts out. Split boot trying to get it on with cone, local garage put boots on for me and now doing other shaft, which I removed.
Its recommended to change diff seals..one parts place said they pop out with screwdriver but the left side one was a plate held on with four bolts that seems to hold the seal and inner bearing in, with what looks like a gasket.
The right side seal is behind the exhaust, kind of accessible ..but...not sure what to unbolt to change right hand seal. Maybe I shouldnt change seals..need the van running.....?
Edit- plate on left side seems glued on with sealant. Trying to lever it off.

Its hold in by more than bolts. Rotates but stuck.

Edit-- its off.
Uploading photos of right side seal. There seems to be a housing but which bolts to undo is not clear.
Some of the photos are for the left side seal.
Thanks in advance.

Think this is the seal:

Appears to have a metal backing ring, so should just lever out, where I've marked in green:

Many thanks for reply. MPD have supplied me a febi bilstein seal 027816224488 for the right shaft. Still in packet, it doesn't have a metal flange..so I'll clean up around where the old seal is fitted and see if it looks like it will prise out.

Edit- you were right. I prised old seal out, ut has metal flange. Most supppliers show seal withoui flange, MPD got the same wrong part in twice.

Bit of a nightmare. The seal you picture looks like the one on my vehicle. MPD have supplied one without a metal flange which is listed for some citroens: febi 22448 also citroen ref 3121.46

I'll look up the part in your pic using the cat number visible.
Not sure what would hold this seal in place apart from friction. Maybe drive shaft keeps it in place.

Just held in by friction, just lever it out under the metal edge, then tap the new one in with a socket or block of wood. I just searched for Dispatch driveshaft seal, and found this one: https://www.eurocarcare.net/gearbox-par ... right.html

Thanks Richard. Have spent hours looking up seals, phoned citroen dealer, phoned citroen gearbox place but i hadnt narrowed it down to ask them which seal is correct. The one you suggest with metal plate looks correct will check out your link thanks

The saga endeth: RichardW was correct. I thought I'd get the part quicker locally but MPD got the wrong seal twice and said I had the wrong gearbox...
Even a Citroen dealer drew a blank with the new part number until i sent pictures...
For the record, citroen part number is 1675689680 which has been superceded by 1686556580 which most places don't recognise.

Right side gearbox lipseal.

Edit: the saga never endeth. Citroen sent me a flangeless seal with a wobbly exterior rubber lip which probably wont like being tapped in with a socket. Nothing to stop it going into diff, not that I'd do such a thing...

Stick slightly larger screw (or something similar) into diagonally opposite holes of the bracket and pull it out.
