Black screen of the Citroen C5 X7 2014 navigation display.

Post by cit-rotti »

Yesterday everything was still working and today the colour multifunction display remains "black".

The vehicle is a C5 X7 HDI 163 FAP; year of construction 2014; Orga: 13609; VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff].

The fuse F8 is OK.

The spare part number according to the hotline is 9801020080.

Does anyone have any clues for this defect and its cause???

How can the crap thing be removed without causing damage?

Does the diagnosis provide any information on how to repair the damage?

Are there companies that can check and repair this kind of thing?

Hi Wolfgang.

With screen issues, Service will usually undertake a test to determine whether it is the Head Unit (RT6 in your case) or the actual Display Screen. There are different procedures to do this according to model.

Generally it involved going into a special menu, activating a setting that takes a screenshot of an internal image and then outputs the image to a USB. They then check the output on the media. If the media has an image, then it is the Display that has failed. If there is no image on the media, then it means the RT6 Hardware has failed (graphics chip most likely) and that means the whole unit will need to be repaired or replaced.

The front fascia panel has to be removed to get to the fixings for the display screen (but the air vents do not need removing). Along the bottom of the fascia is a trim decor. Remove this carefully by unclipping with trim tools, then this will expose the screws that hold the fascia in place, remove these and gently pull to unclip to expose the display fixings.

Units are not repaired by PSA and no details are provided of repairs - they are sent off to Citroen's repair partner (Clarion here in the UK) or replaced at the customer's choice.

Of course it all depends on what fault codes (if any) are also showing up and whether the other functions of the RT6 are working (Sound, changing audio sources, parking assistance beeps, etc).

Thanks Marc - today I tried a diagnosis - both with the software 7.57 and the 9.96 and original VCI no contact to the control unit is possible - "connection error" - this did not exist before - does this result in another problem?

And where can I find this control unit in order to remedy possible contact problems?

I think from what you are saying that means it is not communicating with the RT6 ECU (internal to the unit). If it can't communicate with it then it can't provide any fault codes.

You didn't mention if any of the function (apart from display) are working on the RT6 or not - can you hear the radio for example, can you make a bluetooth call / play streaming audio etc? If the answer is no, then I suspect it is the RT6 that has hardware failure - especially if there is also no comms with the RT6.

As correctly stated it is a RT6 RNEG2 from Magneti Marelli with Bluetooth.
And there is neither a picture nor sound.
Sometimes you hear a sound as if a CD/DVD is being ejected or similar - but nothing is inserted.
I am therefore looking for a circuit diagram to check whether there is a cable break in the power supply line (plus/minus).
Perhaps only the micro card is defective.
Is there a cheap device that can be installed instead of the RT6?
I would be grateful for any information.

The CD whirring noise is indicative of it trying to find the firmware CD, so it obviously has an internal issue. I would be reluctant to insert the firmware CD into it to be honest, as sometimes this can cause it to get stuck in a loop and refuse to eject the CD.

You could try inserting the firmware on USB, but if the screen is blank, you won't be able to see any options or answer questions Wolfgang.

Given that you have no comms with the RT6, I think it's safe to assume it's not booting up properly. This means you won't be able to copy your system configuration / User Data files from the internal MicroSD card should you wish to consider replacing it. This is still possible, but the downside is depending on the existing firmware that is on the unit, it may reset the RT6 configuration to default values and then lock the ECU into secure mode, requiring configuration download from dealer servers.

Do you know which version of firmware was on the unit already? If it is already updated to V2.86, then you may get away with it.

I would suggest that at this point, you have nothing to loose

If you need RT6 firmware let me know.

Hello Marc,
thanks for your advice - I'll probably have to take the RT6 RNG2 from Magneti Marelli to a suitable specialist workshop, because dealing with this electronic stuff is way beyond my screwdriver skills.

I just wanted to check a few connections in advance and need - if possible - the wiring diagram for this specific chassis number and the breakdown of the unit numbers.

The fuse F8 is functional, but perhaps there is an interruption in the wiring harness or the earth is defective.

Thank you for your effort and greetings

I am reporting a new problem:

The device was repaired in Poland - micro SD card replaced and new data loaded - and installed today - but unfortunately the radio does not emit any sound - the speakers remain mute and it displays 4 errors which cannot be cancelled. All other functions are OK (sat nav/clock/distance warning etc.)

Error: in the telematics control unit RNEG2010

C94E Front right audio output error//local//circuit interruption

C94F Front left audio output error//local//circuit interruption

C950 Rear right audio output error//local//circuit interruption

C951 Rear left audio output error//local//circuit interruption

No error is stored in the audio amplifier control unit.

According to the Service hotline, the box has a total of 9 loudspeakers and one amplifier

4 speakers 6562Q7 - 4 speakers 6562 Q6 and one amplifier BA speaker 6562 X7

Unfortunately, I have the question of the Polish repair company

"Is there a JBL multiplex amplifier/bass tube in the boot?" incorrectly with no and thus triggered the problem

What options do I have to correct this - a diagnostic device without internet access is available.

Can someone help me and, if necessary, show me the way to the diagnostic device.

Hi Wolfgang

Yes your vehicle has the equaliser Amplifier option, so before I go into the codes above, when the people that repaired your RT6 coded the options back, did you advise them you had the equaliser Amp fitted? This is required to be configured in the RT6 ECU / BSI and important to ensure they have the correct configuration.

If you have your diagbox up and working, make sure the following 2 options are set as follows:

Audio Amplifier: Presence of an audio amplifier equaliser = (Present)
Audio amplification and equaliser: Presence of an audio equaliser amplifier = (Yes)

Please advise of what the following are currently set to:

1) "Parking assistance audible warning emitted by the switching module under the steering wheel" ?
2) "Presence of RD4 audio equipment" ?

Make sure when you disconnect any connectors from the back of the RT6 (battery disconenction should be followed ideally (BSI Reset / Battery Disconnect / Reconnect Procedure) and always make sure you remove the Quadlock connector first, and always replace it last.

Given all these fault codes are similar, I can only assume it is related to a connection at the back of the RT6 that has been disturbed during removal reconnection or a configuration issue when the unit was repaired and configured. I suspect they used Mirascripts to set the vehicle options, and if they got some part wrong, then this may be why.

As for the amplifier side, I really can't see a connection being disturbed from there as it is buried inside the dashboard and is unlikely to of been disturbed:

In that case Wolfgang, you can do this yourself, but you will need Diagbox V7. Typically V7.65 should be fine and you can telecode offline once we know the answers to my questions in my last post.

Firstly, thank you for your detailed information.

It is most likely a configuration problem when the device was repaired and configured because I made incorrect entries.

I inadvertently told the Polish repair company that there was "no" multiplex amplifier/bass tube in the boot" and thus triggered the problem.

I have several original VCIs and various offline Diagbox tools
7.57 and 9.68 and 9.96 and 9.150 and think that the 7.57 should be the most suitable tool

My problem is that I have not yet found the right menu to change the settings in the various control units.

If I don't succeed in correcting my error myself, I will have to send the telematics unit to Poland again to have it changed.

You need to go into the BSI configuration.

Run a full diagnostic (necessary without V7.58 which allows independent ECU access), which is why I suggested 7.65 as it then fixes some C5 X7 bugs post V7.58.
When test is complete. you need to select BSI from list of ECUs and manual configuration (obviously be very careful here regarding any changes), scroll through the settings until you come to all options concerning those in my last post Wolfgang. Make a note of the existing settings and make sure the first 2 I listed are set as shown.

The other two I mentioned, I need you to confirm what are currently set to before changing anything.

Hey all, I have a Citroen berlingo 2013 XTR with the radio RT6 RNEG2 with this kind of problem:

My screen is black, and constantly gives a light behind the black screen. It keeps getting on while the cd port is buzzing on and off. So the black screen keeps flickering on and off. I also hear a buzzing sound like the cd is reading and then off again. Should this method that Givemeabreak has thoroughly explained work for this problem?

If yes, do I need a new usb and what size should the usb be? and what about the sd card should that be also new or can I format one and which size? I am a beginner in this.
