DO all CX Turbo Diesels use a timing belt ?

I am here in the USA where CX Turbo Diesels were never sold (and almost never seen).
I owned a 1983 CX Diesel that DID NOT use a timing belt ... gears instead.
I believe that in 1984 the CX Turbo Diesel was introduced ... did that CX Turbo Diesel have timing gears like my 1983 ? or a timing belt.
What year did Citroen Diesels STOP using timing gears? and why did they change to rubber drive belts for the timing and the diesel injection pump? This seems like a mistake by Citroen as it was an imminent failure item.
Please tell me whatever you can about this: I would really like to know.

Hi there, as far as I know the CX 2500 Diesel and Turbo Diesel used timing chain and not timing belt. I think the Diesel engines on the CX were derived from the engine block of the petrol CX 2400 which in turn was derived from the DS 23 engine. Similarly the CX 2200 and 2000 from the DS 21 and DS 20. All of these used timing chain and block - mounted camshaft. I think the CX diesels used the same. I think the only CX model to use a timing belt was the Douvrin engined CX20 and CX22 petrol cars. Happy to be corrected though!

I believe all Citroen Diesels used a timing belt from the BX17 D onwards from the mid 80s. Then the XM D12 (2.1) and 2.5Diesel, then Xantia wth similar units through the 90s right up to the introduction of the HDi 2.0 and beyond 2001 with the introduction of the C5 etc. I think timing belts have been pretty much the norm from the 80s to date? As long as the timing belt is changed at (or before) the correct service interval there is not likely to be a problem.
