1.6 HDi P0406/P0490/P1162 codes

Unread post by bnorb »

Hello!

I have a Xsara Picasso with a 1.6 HDi, and I have an EGR issue that I can't seem to get rid of.

About a year ago, I replaced the EGR valve, as it was completely shot. Soot even got up into the actuator, so it could barely turn. Evidently, I messed up here because I did not reinitialize it in the ECU. It worked for a while, but I started getting fault codes relating to it fairly soon.

A couple of months ago, while I did an overhaul of the injectors, I cleaned the manifold as best I could, so there's no blockage there. While I was at it, I checked how the new EGR looked. It was pretty dirty, but nothing crazy, it turned easily. I also tried reinitializing it then with a lexia.

After all that, the current situation is that I often get a check engine light, which goes away after a while, then comes back and so on. The engine runs okay and does not go into limp mode. I have a P0406, a P0490, and a P1162 when the light comes on.

So I suspect there's some kind of issue with the sensor of the EGR. I read that some of the aftermarket ones are quite bad, and I didn't buy the most expensive one, that's for sure. I can't swap the sensor from the old EGR, as the sensor in the new one is different. And I can't swap the whole electronic part of the EGR because the old one is full of soot.

How should I go about diagnosing the issue? should I just get a new, more expensive EGR, initialize it in the ECU and hope for the best?

What brand of EGR did end up working for you, and how much was it? I originally bought a Loro for about 50 quid. There's a pretty wide range to choose from, I hope I can get away with not buying the 300 quid one from Pierburg :-D Does 80-100 sound reasonable?
