2002 Peugeot 106 1.1 locking crankshaft/flywheel

Unread post by OJ_ »

Hello, I got my first peugeot two weeks ago and I'm doing a bit of preventative maintenance. This is my first time doing a timing belt, but I thought this looked like a fairly good engine to have a first attempt on.

Got the new belt and water pump on and the car back together, but it sounded really rattly. I'm fairly certain the belt is off by one tooth. This all came about after I mistakenly tried to turn the engine with the old belt on the camshaft before marking the crank pulley location on the block. I think when I did this the old belt skipped a tooth.

Anyway after a good bit of reading online, I'm pretty sure that to lock the crank I insert a 6mm pin into a small hole behind the oil filter housing on the right of the engine block. I've been trying this for ages but it's so fiddly where the hole is and I can't seem to get the pin to insert into the flywheel.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I'm just about at my whits end and I'm really worried I've messed up my new car.

It is where you say it is but jolly tricky to find... Use a small mirror to get a good visual fix on its location and then you'll stand a much better chance of getting a locking pin in.

The hole is obscured by a web in the crankcase casting just to make it a bit harder.

I use a piece of brake pipe bent in such a way it assists in finding the hole.

It is absolutely essential that both cam and crank are firmly locked when swapping the cambelt. Also, ensure it's correctly timed after six slow rotations after fitting...

If it's tensioned incorrectly it'll end up half a tooth out or even a full tooth out. If so, start again from scratch.

Be careful with tension...

Here is a tutorial that I did on a C3's 1.4. I don't think the site allows linking so just copy and past into the address bar.

Being 1 tooth out would not cause a problem. HOWEVER if you are just taking the CURRENT position of the belt as correct, that may be a problem. If the current position is incorrect and you put the belt out by another tooth, that could be a problem.
That is why you should pin both the crank and cam shafts! Then you know it's right. Assuming that the "last guy" did it right is not a good idea.
