2009 C3 Picasso 1.6 HDI, what service is needed?

Unread post by pieri70 »

Hello
I just bougth a C3 Picasso 1.6 HDI, 9HX engine with 200.000Km from friends of mine.
Car number is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]
It was serviced regularly but I think they didn't serviced the timing belt so I'm going to do it by myself (I already made timing belt service on fiat 1.9 MJT and 2.5 TD, no problem with those).
Looking at youtube and it should be no problem to service also this car.
If I'n not wrong this car is 16V and has a timing chain between the camshafts. Does it need to be replaced at how many Km??
Is it difficult to replace this chain/tensioner? Any walktrough?

I also see that the turbo oil tube that drive oil to the turbo has a little filter that can clog and the oil don't come to the turbo, making it dead.
I am planning to substitute it too.

Oil/filters are just serviced (5000Km) but I plan to change them.

Some other work to be done?

Thanks everybody
Pietro

Please post your VIN in full without spaces - it will be automatically masked from public view after submitting your post & will only be visible to staff. I'll advise on the timing service interval for you and the number of valves.

Ok thanks
Vin is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]
What is the timing service for chain?
For timing belt it should be 240.000km or 10 years, the chain I don't know.
Is there a workshop handbook somewhere?
Today I disassembled the air filter box which had bumpers gone
Then I prepared for timing belt replacement operation.
Then I tried to remove the DPF shells.
The Top one went away but the front one is impossible to extract?
All bolts removed...
Thanks

The Chain is not part of the servicing schedule and is not part of the timing belt service.

Timing Belt is every 240k KMs or 10 years, whichever comes soonest.
Brake Fluid every 2 years
Standard servicing is every 20k KMs or every 2 years

It's a big job, nothing specified about the DPF only the exhaust line.... Have you got all the tools: flywheel locking tools, camshaft probe, Crankshaft setting rod and high pressure fuel pump drive pulley immobilising rod?

Yes, or better, some bolt or drill bits (5-8mm) will work I think.
I was able to remove the DPF.
Now I must decide If it is better to change the turbo it has oil leakage to the intercooler or not..

Anyway
To remove the DPF and the heating shells that cover the oil tube that goes to the turbocharger I had to remove the front bumpers, front lights and then the top part that holds the hood lock.
Now, considering the amount of work to disassemble all, I think I will change the turbo. Can you suggest a good dealer?
Thanks

On an intercooled turbodiesel it's quite normal to see a bit of oil in the intercooler pipes... It's from the Positive Crankcase Ventiliation system and nothing to worry about unless very excessive, yours is not.

I'd not replace the turbo unless you know for sure it's not in good condition.

On the turbo side oil was much more..
Didn't take a picture.
And the car makes lot of black smoke if I push the accelerator.
How do I diagnose a bad condition turbo?

Remove the intercooler and hoses and clean them thoroughly.
Made a huge difference to my C5.

For reference
This guy made super detailed videos on how to disassemble head and make chain replacement (tensioner gone) on a mini diesel 2009 that seems to have the same engine as my car

How do I diagnose a bad condition turbo?
A failed turbo will either cause much oil to be burned - blue and smelly smoke - and be horrendously noisy or will cause very poor performance from being seized. If seized, this can cause black smoke as the engine cannot draw in enough oxygen to permit full combustion.

On a diesel, blue smoke is oil being burned, black is incomplete combustion due to lack of oxygen or a bad injector spray pattern and white smoke is unburned diesel where absolutely no combustion has taken place...

If you have black smoke, before condemning the turbo, check the air filter and all inlet air trunking for blockages/obstructions and check the intercooler is not blocked... Then have the injectors checked if the problem persists.

I've seen cases where a pipe between the air filter and turbo inlet was squashed, thus strangling the engine of air and causing it to make black smoke...

Yes, fill it with solvent such as carburettor cleaner or brake/clutch cleaner and dry it very thoroughly... I'd blow through it using an airline. That will give you a good idea of how clear it is...

DO NOT use any water under any circumstances... Any remaining could cause a lot of grief!

Ouch!
Too late
looking at some videos I cleaned with gasoline (2x), degreaser with hot water (2x), disk washing and hot water(2x) and then hot water alone until transparent water was flowing..
Now I let it outside upside-down. I'm not in a hurry so I can leave it there for 2/3 days..

To be sure that no water is inside I can hook up a vacuum an let it for some time

Good plan! That will be fine :) If you can be sure there's not a drop of water left inside the intercooler all will be good...
