Dash cam with image stabilisation
Quite a specific quest from me.......
I use dash cams on all my vehicles and have done for years, but today I had a near miss with someone driving straight across a crossroads a foot or so in front of my bumper This was in my hairdryer (MX5) and whilst the footage at the slow speed I was going would have been perfectly admissable in court (!) a lot of the previous footage was somewhat <ahem> 'jumpy' due to the nature of the car So..... I'm on the look out for a newer dash cam that has decent image stabilisation.
I'm perfectly capable of driving Google , and all roads seem to lead to the Nextbase 622GW costing between £200 and ∞ , but has anyone else done the leg work and found a different / good camera with decent IS ? It's not that I can't be bothered to do the research, more a case of - Why reinvent the wheel ?
Any thoughts ?

Re: Dash cam with image stabilisation
My only thought on that one bobins is that I'd like to know the answer!
It is not really a coincidence that I have a similar issue in my MX3 to the point that I have removed the camera altogether as the footage tends to be pretty useless even compared with my Legacy's footage which is using the same camera but on a far more stable mount/base. As such I keep telling myself to do the legwork and get a new camera but it certainly would be handy to have it done for me!!

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Re: Dash cam with image stabilisation
I looked at various Nextbase models and gave them a wide berth given the amount of returns and failures / overheating they seemed to be plagued with and for the price, thought I'm not going to pay that price. I had originally ordered one - and it was returned immediately after it failed to work! Enough said.
I think you can find plenty of other systems out there for a lot less and better quality. I currently use the Navitel R10 eyeball which has a great HD picture and swivels 360 on it's magnetic socket so you can quickly orient the camera where you need it in a hurry without all the faff. Very please with it and have never had an issue with it to date.
I did an install here with pictures. Can only speak from my own experience with it, but it is also so easy to remove - just pluck the eyeball out the socket and take it with you! I tho
ink Chris was going to get one - and he posted a review video in the thread too.

Re: Dash cam with image stabilisation
My issue is that I specifically want (need) a dash cam with image stabilisation and there don't appear to be many on the market. Two of my four dash cams are Nextbase ones and I can't fault them, though I don't doubt that others have had issues with them. If I get the chance, I'll upload some footage from the car which will amply show why IS is needed

Mount your MX5 on an hydraulic Citroen?
I did wonder if mounting the camera on a gyroscopic gimbal (Amazon listing) might work but doubt it.

Re: Dash cam with image stabilisation
My bike video cameras do an excellent job of image stabilisation... They need to or they'd be useless.
I wonder if you could adapt one Robin? My Cycliq Fly 12 runs for 8 hours or more on a charge and will take a 128GB SD card...
It'll also do clever things like pausing recording after a period being stopped and if it detects a crash - via accelerometers - it'll record a further 30 minutes of video before shutting down to preserve evidence. It can also be fully controlled from a smartphone.
Two potential downsides: mounting it in a car and the price. They're now somewhere north of £300 For me, fully justified.

If you want to do a test run with mine Robin, you are more than welcome I'm sure between us we can rig up a mount...

Here's a 10 second clip of what I'm up against. It's worse than this when I drive over bumpier roads, but I didn't want to upload that clip in case I made anyone travel sick

Re: Dash cam with image stabilisation
To make it a fair comparison, Jim, you'll need to be doing between 40-50mph Perhaps you could nip over to Mont Ventoux on one of your extended bike rides and pedal downhill on that
