Key programming

Post by Peter Palmer »

Hi, I wanted and extra key for our van (Dispatch 2015) so I ordered a remote fob of one ebay seller and a cut blade of another one. This additional key would make a total of 4 keys for the vehicle, 3 remote and one standard key.

I have done the hard part and got all 4 keys working with the immobiliser through diagbox and they all start the vehicle but I cant get the lock/unlock buttons to work on the new key, I've tried a new battery, put the circuit board into a working key body but I just can't get the buttons to sync with the vehicle. The other two remote keys lock and unlock the van ok.

It was this key I got, I take it the frequency must be correct if the immobiliser part works ok, is it a faulty key?

It's likely that the circuitry is not compatible with the vehicle. The immobiliser part using the transponder chip will work as expected once coded, but the circuitry has to be compatible to work with the vehicle's other features like the lock / unlock and middle button function (if fitted) and it is obviously not.

The transponder chip in the fob is read and energised by the ignition key transponder aerial which is why you will be able to start the vehicle, but the other features are remote operations and the sender and receiver have to be compatible.

How do you know what is compatible though, I've had cheap keys of ebay before for this vehicle and they have programmed in fine.

That's the problem there are all sorts of rubbish out there on the market. Key programming is one thing (which you have done) but the circuitry in the fob still has to be compatible otherwise they will be talking a different language.

I can't help you with aftermarket parts Peter, but others may chip in.

It's not so much that the keys are rubbish but that there are two different ways of modulating the remote function signal: ASK and FSK. Do you happen to know which type(s) you bought? If you bought one of each then at last one should work! At that point you need to check that both keys are emitting a radio signal.

ASK (Amplitude Shift Keying) or FSK (Frequency Shift Keying).

As said above you will have the wrong frequency type, I recon based on my notes this vehicle will be FSK but your ebay ad says the one you bought is ASK. Get a new one & swap the shells over

Yes it seems so, some of the listings for keys state ASK = pre 2011 and FSK = post 2011. The thing was though I bought the key based on whether it had a milled grooved in the side or not and the ebay compatibility checker said it will work with my vehicle. But it was only about £8 so not worth going after a refund or anything so I've purchased an FSK key and will see how that goes.

Are you trying to add 3 remotes to the car? The engine ECU may accept up to 5 transponders but The BSI will only accept 2 remotes!

First i've heard of that one? what vehicles are you saying this in the case on? On my Old X7 C5 (which is full CAN like the vehicle in question) i had 3 fully functioning remotes, 2 originals & one aftermarket)

It's 5 keys on the dispatch that can be memorised.

Yes 5 remote keys as far as i know, i think Oz is suggesting that out of the 5 keys only 2 of them can be remote keys though. Never heard of this on a PSA car.

All works now, got the FSK key this morning and programmed them all in again so I now have 3 remote keys working and one standard key.

So for future use FSK is definitely the more modern key at least on Dispatches.
