I have to agree the subject is pretty well camouflaged but click on the picture to enlarge it and the actual subject will be slightly above dead centre!! :-D

We used to have loads of hedgehogs where I live mainly because the neighbors over the road ran a hedgehog sanctuary. But they've now stopped so super rare. If only people put a hole in the bottom of their fence/kick boards they could travel more and help more gardeners out eating those slugs

Rare in general but not in our garden. They all visit every evening around 30 mins after dark and SWMBO puts out food for them. They are around between Feb/Mar and Oct/Nov according to weather, temperature and their hibernation. I think they must be on the third or fourth generation by now as she has been looking after them for longer than I care to remember. We have a hoghouse in the garden which is sometimes used for hibernation but not every year, this is what it looks like:

That is awesome! Did you make that yourself or is it shop bought? My daughter loves hedgehogs and wants them to stay...

I built it myself about 15 years ago, we had it out the front originally but moved it to the back to encourage the hogs to stay away from the road. SWMBO has erected 'Slow beware of the hedgehogs' signs at either end of our crescent and they thrive pretty well around here. As you mentioned we have cut an opening in our back gate and in the back fence and, together with a purpose built ramp I installed, they come and go as they please.

If you want to attract them, put out wet cat food and a bowl of water which you must keep clean or they will snub it!! :-D

In your opinion would this be a good spot for a hog house? The cone is there because my boy had a choice, half a tree or keep the cone.....

Yes that looks pretty good. You need to set the house at the back around 5-600mm square with a 400mm long tunnel entrance coming along the side that is only 150mm ish high and wide. Its purpose is to keep foxes and raptors out. Generally cats are not too much of an issue as the hogs own spiny backs deter them.
Well worth the effort as you can then rig a camera up and watch their antics without scaring them!! Ideally you need to make the roof both water and wind proof, I use a pond liner, as well as removable for cleaning and filling with hay/straw in the autumn :-D

Cool, those spare kick boards will be used. I hate wasting wood. Should I put leaves/hay/food inside to tempt them in? Sorry for taking this away from POTD

Generally they will make their beds themselves but there is no reason why you shouldn't give them a start with some hay. Don't put leaves in as they will choose what leaves they want and may be put off if you use ones unacceptable to them. Also never put food in the house, firstly it may attract rats, secondly it will smell in the heat and thirdly generally they do not sleep where they eat. It will take a time to attract them but once they know they can rely on food and water they will settle in the area. You can set your watch by ours now and heaven help SWMBO if she's late putting out the food, which reminds me don't put it out before dark as you will only end up feeding the local cats, and clear the dish away every morning to deter other critters looking for a free lunch!! :-D
Maybe we should start a hedgehog thread? :-D
