Water in Fuel Filter

Unread post by whitevanman »

I just bought a 1995 306 and on first drive I have found that the "Water in Fuel Filter" warning light comes and goes...
What does this mean and is it serious?! How can it be fixed?!

Hi
It could be a dodgy wire, it is French after all.
Could be you have water in the fuel system, Have you changed the fuel filter, Drained the water out the filter?
Notice any white smoke in the exhaust & lack of power? If yes thats the water burning off.

By all accounts, this is a fairly common fault. The sensors in the filter housing are prone to failure, giving false positives. To be sure, drain a small amount of fuel from the filter housing using the bleed screw and check for water. If there's little to none, you've probably got a duff sensor. I got fed up with the orange light on my dash so I took the bulb out [:)] You could do the same, disconnect the sensor or just ignore it. I don't think it's worth fixing.
Be sure to periodically check the filter for water though; monthly if you're keen, or you could leave it until the 6k oil change. Obviously if you continually find considerable amounts of water then further investigation is needed.

When we had two 205's in our family fleet, one had a water-in-fuel sensor and the other hadn't. Neither of them ever got water in there, but the light sometimes played up. In the end I disconnected it.

I get this problem in my 95 306 td all the time - despite having changed the fuel filter recently. It must be a common recurring fault - John, did you have to disconnect the light behind the dashboard or os there an easier way of doing it?

you could instead disconnect the sensor plug from the bottom of the fuel filter housing.

Yes - that's what I did - the easiest as well!

Was this the top left orange dash light, that looks like some tank with two outlets at the top and some liquid in the bottom?
