Plugging a vacuum hose by the look of it.
A modification by a previous owner?

A vacuum to what would be my question, it's next to the intake manifold, so it's concerning me a little

That's what I'm worried about. Can't find any decent info on C8 2.2s anywhere on the web. Even FCF results in Google give little to no info on placements/engine layout

Whereabouts is that pipe? My C5 has a 2.2 engine, so it might be possible for me to help work out where the pipe should go.

The last photograph shows something with what looks like a corresponding spigot (or where one should be) by the bolt head. Unfortunately there are quite a few differences between my engine and yours.

EGR pipe (connected to inlet manifold) goes sailing past this mystery pneumatic actuator, so seems unlikely to do with this??

You could try to 'bodge' a spigot onto that part just behind the bolt. It would take some care, because you would have to drill out the remains of the broken spigot and then fashion a replacement (probably from brass, as this is quite malleable).

I don't think it's broken, a simple jubilee clip should fit it, it just puzzles me as to why a bolt has been placed there and why?? And what's the reason for not fitting it back on to the other thingy me jiggy

Well, you could connect it up and see what happens! I wonder if that is a vacuum device that is playing up (hence whey the pipe was disconnected)? On a previous C5 I had an electro-valve gone short circuit, while the EGR valve had a split diaphragm.

If I didn't need the car for work tomorrow I would but don't want to risk it. After tomorrow I'm back on the train so will see what happens

On my 2.2 HDI 406 Coupe, there is a vacuum driven actuator roughly in the same area - it is quite a bit lower down, nearer the gearbox bell housing. On mine this is for the inlet swirl flaps (shut at lower RPM, I think this shuts part off and the engine works as though 8 valve (1 inlet valve per cylinder is flowing) Higher RPM flaps opened and 2 valves per cylinder available for the air rushing in.

Agree, it has hallmarks of previous owner: "split diaphragm, can't (or can't be bothered!) to source new actuator, do just plug it and keep driving"

I think on the Coupe forum there was discussion about some of these actuators being unavailable / very difficult to source.
