power supply to glow plugs

Unread post by gustav »

Hello!
I drive a c5 2.0hdi 2010. A few weeks ago my car died while driving. It was towed to a workshop. The fault was the egr valve or more precisely the connector that was cleaned to the valve and now the car runs fine. BUT the mechanic also said that the power to the glow plugs was not working and this I'm sure was working last winter. In Sweden you notice it quite quickly and I miss the little yellow spiral in the instrument panel now. In connection with the car dying, a series of error codes appeared which the workshop deleted. Is it just a coincidence or is there a connection to the egr valve that the power supply to the glow plugs is now missing?

Glow plugs on these are common to fail - it will be either the plug or the plug heating control box that supplies the plugs. Normally the X7 will start in minus degree temperatures here in the UK without issue when there is a glow plug failure, but I can't say for Swedish winters. The glow plugs can also be used for assisted regeneration of the particle filter by the engine ECU when it needs to increase exhaust gas temperature.

The power to the glow plug relay is separate, but we would need the fault codes if any are remaining if you still have an issue.

I do? Relay? Or something to do with fuel temp sensor and Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor? What is the culprit?

Gustav, let me have your VIN and I'll check out the main issues with the crankshaft sensor faults as I need to ascertain engine version you have which makes a difference. Please post your VIN in full without spaces - it will be automatically masked from public view after submitting your post & will only be visible to staff.

Well you have more than a glow plug issue going on! I would first focus on your crankshaft sensor as that is going to casue knock-on problems.

We know about the glow plugs, but here's the others:
Fault Code: P0336
Description of Fault: Engine speed signal: Absence of signal under starter. Absence of signal from the engine speed sensor on starting.
Conditions for Fault to clear: Under starter
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: -
Symptoms:
  • Starting problem
Suspect Areas:
  • Engine speed sensor
  • Engine speed sensor target
  • Electrical harness
  • Connections

Fault Code: P0337
Description of Fault: Engine speed signal: Signal not coherent. The number of teeth seen on the target of the engine speed sensor is too low on 1 engine rev.
The fault is forwarded after 2 engine revolutions
Conditions for Fault to clear: Under starter
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: -
Symptoms:
  • Starting problem
  • Jerking/stalling
Suspect Areas:
  • Engine speed sensor target
  • Engine speed sensor
  • Electrical harness
  • Connector

Fault Code: P0338
Description of Fault: Engine speed signal: Signal not coherent. Engine speed signal too close: too many teeth over one crankshaft revolution. Too many teeth are seen on the engine speed sensor target over 1 revolution. The fault is forwarded after 2 engine revolutions.
Conditions for Fault to clear: Under starter
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: -
Symptoms:
  • Starting problem
  • Jerking/stalling
Suspect Areas:
  • Engine speed sensor target
  • Engine speed sensor
  • Electrical harness
  • Connector

Fault Code: P0183
Description of Fault: Diesel fuel temperature signal: Short circuit to positive or open circuit. The fault occurs if the voltage of the diesel fuel temperature signal is above the maximum threshold, corresponding to a temperature of -40°C, for more than 1 second.
Conditions for Fault to clear: Ignition on
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: -
Symptoms:
  • Lack of power
  • Jerking/stalling
  • Starting problem
Suspect Areas:
  • Electrical harness
  • Temperature sensor
  • Engine ECU
Is your exterior temperature sensor on the dash working correctly? If not, this can cause issues as listed for a suspect in the above fault code for P0183.

Fault Code: P0490
Description of Fault: Position indicator signal of the EGR valve: Positive loop gap. Positive difference of 30% % between the exhaust gas recirculation valve position reference value and the position measured.
Conditions for Fault to clear: Driving for 5 minutes
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: -
Symptoms:
  • Noise
  • Smoke from the exhaust
  • Diesel fuel consumption a bit higher
  • Lack of power
Suspect Areas:
  • Electrical harness
  • Connector
  • Exhaust gas recycling valve
  • Clogged particle filter

Fault Code: P0181
Description of Fault: Diesel fuel temperature signal: Coherence in the evolution of the temperature. The fault occurs if the variations in the diesel fuel temperature signal exceed the maximum threshold of 250 °C/second for more than 1 second.
Conditions for Fault to clear: Ignition on
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: -
Symptoms:
  • Lack of power
  • Engine hesitating, cutting out
Suspect Areas:
  • Electrical harness
  • Connector
  • Fuel temperature sensor
  • Engine management ECU

Fault Code: P0495
Description of Fault: Cooling Function Incorporated in the ECU ( electric cooling fan unit): Coherence between cooling fan fast speed and the reference. The fan unit is controlled at low speed and the actual speed is not low speed or if the fan unit is not controlled but even so is engaged.
Conditions for Fault to clear: Driving for 5 minutes
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
  • Air conditioning cut-off
  • Reduction in the activation thresholds for the coolant temperature alert
Symptoms: -
Suspect Areas:
  • Electric cooling fan unit

Thanks Marc! I will start by replacing the fuel temp sensor and the Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. Do you have the partsnumbers for my motor? There were several to choose from at Autodoc :-)

About the Glow plugs: Would you say it is the relay?

It could be either the glow plug relay or the plugs, as despite power to the relay, the ECU is reporting the plugs are not supplied and the relay is not closing down when commanded.
Fault Code: P1351
Description of Fault: Pre-heating relay circuit: Coherence ; Relay supplied and glow plugs not supplied. The information from the preheating control unit indicates that the relay is open even though the ECU commands the closing of the relay for 5 seconds.
Conditions for Fault to clear: Ignition on
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: -
Symptoms:
  • Lack of power
  • Noise
  • Jerking/stalling
  • Starting problem
Suspect Areas:
  • Pre-heater plug
  • Electrical harness
  • Pre/post heating relay
