Problem with new drive shaft (or not)

Unread post by Starek »

Hi guys,
I had both complete driveshafts replaced over the weekend, however I am not happy with one of the CV boots, please see pictures attached.
I bought the part from GSF car parts, and it was fitted by my colleague mechanic.
I know mechanic is good as I used him for years, and I was always extremely happy with his work.

It's like it's not stretched enough, which I believe might cause damage in the future.
Can you guys let me know what you think ? This drive shafts was not touched, so it came out like this from factory.
Should I take the metal clip and stretch it further ? Will I not lose warranty by doing so ?

I'd say that's the problem. It looks like the little end of the boot is too near the joint itself and needs to be slid along the shaft a little to assume a much more natural position.

If it's brand-new and thus under warranty, I'd look to have it replaced. If not then...

You may be able to move the boot end into a better position by getting your fingers behind the small end and gently pushing it along the shaft with your fingers until it looks 'right'. Don't use tools as you risk puncturing the boot.

Often shafts have a very shallow groove to indicate where the boot clip should be but on yours I don't see one.

Yep, so I'm guessing it's in it. It may have been twisted which would give the same shape as it's under stress. I'd pop the clip on the driveshaft and see how it sits then if all is good, reclip it. Also by unclipping it on the driveshaft you'll see if there is a recess.
