Citroen Berlingo 1.4i Doesnt start, tried evrrything

Unread post by Deniskk »

Hi, I have a 2006 berlingo 1.4i manual and over winter it stopped starting. I have changed the spark plugs, coilpack, cleaned out the injectors, and checked all fuses. The car turns over and is about to start and then stops. If I the ECU, and turning the engine for a bit, and then connect the ecu, it starts for a few seconds and then stalls. Only thing is that the battery is dead completely and always have to jump it from a different car for me to see if it would start or not. - Could this be the issue?

On the diagnostic tool I get these codes:
P0351
P0352
P0201
P0203
P0204
P0202
P0122
P1157
P0444

Note: I have also checked all the cables for damage or any sign of interference and dont see any. If any videos or pictures are required, I will post them.
Does not start with start spray. so I guess fuel isnt a problem either.

Any tips what this could be, or anyone had a similar issue? Ill be greatful for any insignt into this issue.

Thank you in advance

The fault codes are saying that the ignition coils and injectors are not working and throttle pedal/throttle valve signal is low.

I'd try a new battery and see if anything changes. You could have a completeley shorted battery makin voltage too low
I have various repair handbooks and wiring diagrams for C5 mk1, Xantia, XM, Berlingo and C3 mk1.
I have Lexia/Diagbox (Sweden) and Servicebox/sedre

Hi, I tried and sadly nothing. I used a larger battery that i had in another car, the starter cranks alot faster, but still nothing.

This is a video after new battery

This is the video before new battery.

Have you checked the fuel rail pressure?
Tried "starting fluid" down the throttle body?

Hi, ive tried the fueling system, and it seems to work. Ive tested the fuel pressure, and it doesnt start with start spray. Im uploading a picture of the spark plugs which are brand new (only cranked the engine a couple of times due to troubleshooting) https://ibb.co/jMJ2mMh

This is a video of me disconnecting the harness from the fuse box and after reconnecting it it starts fir a second.

If a petrol car does not start with starting spray, either spraying is faulty - an unsuitable starting spray is used or there is no ignition spark.

Small amounts must be sprayed after the air filter.
One person switches on the ignition and starts. The second person then sprays - while the starter motor is running - a suitable starting spray into the intake duct in short bursts.

Hi, thank you for your answer. Im starting to think that there is no spark since, It doesnt start with start spray, Ive started many cars with start spray and this one doesnt. Problem is that I dont know where to look anymore since I have replaced spark plugs and ignition coils. Ive checked the cable with a multimeter and it gives a voltage (cant remember off the top of my head what it was). Would you be able to point me in the right direction what voltage should be given by the cable of the spark plug? since this is the only thing that has not yet been replaced.

I'm going to ask a really stupid question now. Are you sure you have tightened the spark plugs down, and are you sure you put the spark plug cables on the correct plugs?

Hi, yes. The spark plugs are tightened and 2 different coil packs have been tried with it. Both give same outcome.

Can you put in the fault code descriptions so we dont need to look them up?
If there are fault codes for all 4 injectors & all coils it would suggest to me the ECU is not powered up. If you unplug the coolant temp sensor do you get 5 volts with ignition on? Is the fuel pump operating?
The most likely cause of the ECU not powering up is a main relay failure which on this vehicle is an integral part of the engine bay fuse box (BSM). This would need confirming with the wiring diagram.

One of the "brand new" plugs is extremely sooty. Two are sooty but not bad. Too much fuel! The other looks like it has never fired at all! No fuel? Some sort of injector problem? Definitely something funny there.
I still believe you have a fueling problem...but what? I think a clue is that engine starts AFTER the cylinders have been purged! I think there is an over fueling problem.

I would recommend removing the fuel pump fuse so that the fuel pump doesn't run. Then try the starter fluid again.

I found the problem I think. The 4th cylinder with the cleaner spark plug has 0 compression. Therefore maybe the headgasket gave up on life. Ill be taking the head off and then ill see if there are any cracks or anything. Maybe it somehow froze during winter. Ill keep you updated.

Edit: Ill disconnect the injectors completely and see if by some miracle the remaining 3 cylinders start, and ill let you know what happens.

Any updates ? Does your diagnostic do live data ?

Fault code descriptions for those who want them....

On the diagnostic tool I get these codes:
P0351 Ignition Coil A Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
P0352 Ignition Coil B Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
P0201 Injector Circuit Malfunction - Cylinder 1
P0202 Injector Circuit Malfunction - Cylinder 2
P0203 Injector Circuit Malfunction - Cylinder 3
P0204 Injector Circuit Malfunction - Cylinder 4
P0122 Throttle Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit Low Input
P1157 O2 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage (Bank 2 Sensor 2)
P0444 Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit Open

All those faults together would scream to me either a main relay issue (or the relay has been disconnected with the ignition switched on) or the ECU is not powered up, Cant imagine a failed head gasket would cause these faults to log.
