2004 C2 VTR Electric Windows, is this normal

Unread post by larkspeed »

MY 2004 C2 VTR has automatic electric windows on both sides.

I will note that this is a left hand drive car in case it's relevant.

On the passenger side it will go all the way down and all the way up without holding the button, just a quick click.

However on the drivers side it will go all the way down on it's own but not up, to put the window up I have to hold the switch the entire time.

Is this normal behaviour and if it's not what should I be looking at to correct it.

The anti-pinch probably needs initialising.

On the problem window, do not hold the switch at the second click, use the first click which is the manual operation.
The window should attempt to raise and when it stops, release the button and repeat at the first position until the window stops again.
Repeat this procedure until the window actually closes.
When it reached the top, again hold the button at the first position for a few seconds - you should hear a very slight noise from the electric wind motor.

This is not initialised, so try now with the auto one touch opening and closing.

If this has not worked, then the window is meeting resistance. I suggest you use some silicone oil spray (not WD40) and spray into the window channels. Raise the windows up and down several times and make sure the window side channels are well lubricated. This should help ease the windows up.

There is no first and second click on the window switches just a single click.

If you just quickly click and release the switch the window travels it's full range, but if you hold the switch the window will move until you let it go.

It may not be obvious but is there, unless you don't have anti-pinch which would be odd. If you provide your VIN I can check (please post your VIN in full without spaces - it will be automatically masked from public view after submitting your post & will only be visible to staff).

ok you are correct the detent was very light but it was there.

Holding the switch at the first position the window goes all the way up without stopping, just the same as pulling the switch all the way.

When it's at the top I hold it at position one and I hear a click sound, hold it for about 20 seconds and let go.

Window still does the same thing.

I tried pulling up on the window to help it in case it was binding, thought the window does not seem to run any slower than the passenger side, and it still stops when the switch is released.

I tried putting my hand on top of the window to try and hold the window down and the motor just laboured harder and harder to force the window, so it would appear there is no antipinch or the antipinch in not operational.

---edit---

I have just checked the factory specs of the C2 and they all came with antipinch on the windows so I'm guessing the antipinch is permanently thinking something is blocking the window. But then if that were the case the window wouldn't go up at all.

ok I was just running to the store and a thought occurred to me.

When I came home I pulled both switches out of the console and swapped them around.

Now the drivers window goes up and down automatically both ways and the passenger windows only goes auto down.

So it is the switch that is at fault.

Thank you for the help it got me thinking :)

It may be possible to open up and clean the contacts for the switches. Not having seen the inside of C4 switches I cannot say how easy this would be, but I did do this on my first C5, and I went from having a couple of window issues to having all the windows working properly.
