Particle Additive

Unread post by Shaness »

Hi.

So my Peugeot 308 had a few engine faults pop up. They were
Filter at risk of blockage.
Particle Additive too low.
I have just been to my garage and the Additive was done getting rid of these faults.
After leaving the garage the car was very limited on power and I have a red box pop up with engine fault please repair vehicle.
Has anyone had this issue before?
Thanks all

Without having the actual error message codes it looks like you've only had one of them attended to. The risk of filter blockage means that the DPF/FAP needs a deep clean or replacing. Topping up the Eolys additive is only half the job.

How many miles has the car done?

.... Or that the particle filter has been unable to regenerate despite several attempts. This could be due to a series of short journeys where the exhaust gas temp. hasn't been able to reach the minimum required, or the vehicle has been interrupted from regenerating the filter (switching the engine off). So when this 'risk of Particle Filter Clogging' message appears, you need to take if for a brisk run, min. of 40 MPH and keep it in 4th gear for a 15-20 minute spin (once the engine has reached normal temperature).

This should allow the engine ECU to attempt a regeneration and the message should go.

If this happens again, then it may well need cleaning / replacing. You haven't mentioned how many miles the car has done....

It wasn't lacking in power when I took it into the garage.. It was fine power rise. Both of those messages disappeared off the car after the garage has changed Additive.

But did you do anything about the particle filter? Clearing the errors would only have a limited temporary effect.

You haven't said how many miles the vehicle has done.

Sorry the vehicle is now on 108,000. Its back in the garage this morning to see if he hadn't reset something he should have.

I think you are misunderstanding the system and what we are saying.

The Eolys additive counter gets reset when the additive is topped up - but this has a separate warning, such as 'Additive Level too low' or similar. This is when it needs topping up.

That is a separate issue from the actual particle filter clogging message. If the DPF is getting towards end of service life (and it will be at or near with this mileage), then it will need cleaning or replacing very shortly.

Resetting the additive won't have any affect on the filter if it is full of ash and other deposits that cannot be burned off during a regeneration - that is why they only have a certain life before they need removing and deep cleaning or replacing.

The garage has now reset everything as it should be and I have no issues. Power to the vehicle has been restored and I can now accelerate properly. Thanks for your help. I'm getting rid of the vehicle in a few weeks so didn't want any faults on it.

Our C5 has just come up with the message "Particle filter additive level too low: Repair needed". Is it likely that it just needs additive, or that repair of particulate filter is also required?

That means the additive (as estimated by the engine ECU) requires topping up as the remaining mileage to your next maintenance interval exceeds the distance the additive fluid remaining is calculated to be sufficient for.

Normally for V6 engines the particle filter / catalytic converter assembly doesn't need replacing for 225k KMs or 140k miles.
