Peugeot 106 TUD 1.4D vs 1.5D - fuel economy and reliability?

Unread post by kenbw2 »

I'm looking to get a Peugeot 106 diesel. I've has 2x 1.5L 106s before and the fuel economy was phenomenal.

I know there was also a 1.4L version pre-1995. Should I expect better or worse economy from that engine?

I've also read that the bores were different, with the 1.4L having cylinder liners. Is the 1.4L any less reliable than the bulletproof 1.5?

They should be about the same Ken...

The 1.4 had an alloy block with wet liners. These were a source of some problems when they sank a little in the block and upset the head gasket seal.

The 1.5 has a conventional iron block and does not suffer the problems of the 1.4. Keep the cooling system in good condition and change the cambelt regularly and it'll go on for ever!

As Jim says, would expect little meaningful difference the two.

It's the sort of car that'll never exist again: very light and simple engine giving such good economy. Having said that, have read of very good economy delivered by the later 1.4 HDi DV4, so perhaps seeking one of those out (say in a 206, it never made it into the 106 unfortunately - that would have been a cracker!)

Off topic, but 1.4 TUD useable round the 'Ring too!

Loving that video Matt :D The AX is such a light and aerodynamic car so it does not take a lot of power to make it truly fly and a diesel can really make it do so!

I once had a 205 STDT with the 1.8 XUD Turbo engine. The performance of that car was terrifying and was both faster and more eager than my 1.6 205 GTi...

Just proves diesels can combine fun and frugality!

I've had both, a 1.4 in a 106, and a 1.5 in a 106 and an ax. Out of the three the 1.5 ax was the nippiest and most economical, but it was only just over the 1.5 in the 106. Both 1.5 engines felt more drivable than the 1.4, but it was a long time ago now for me to remember. I wouldnt hesitate to own one again if a need for one turned up (unlikely) now, and if a good one exists now, but it's more likely that I would go for a 107 or c1 having owned a few of them too. The more basic the trim level the better!
